Calorimeter coil replacement

Post by SueH »

Is anyone able to tell me the best/easiest way to replace the coil on a Jules Calorimeter. Solder does not seem to adhere to the metal electrodes.
Cheers

The element is made of Nichrome that normal lead solder will not bond to, but you can buy a soft silver solder and special flux that will work.
I think this would be uneconomical if only using once.
Otherwise see if you can find a crimp lug that will clamp element to terminal post.

Go to Dick Smith website and look for resistance wire.
You will find "Cuprothal" which can be soldered with normal solder.

The only problem that you will face, whether you use the Dick Smith brand wire or the Nichrome wire, is getting the wire to fuse to the terminals. This will be achieved by a flux.

Hopefully a Silver solder will have the flux inside the wire ready for immediate use. Silver solder will be a better choice as it is much stronger that other solders.

Soldering the terminals could be offer a challenge since they are very small.
