Pheno going cloudy

Post by joness »

Another question for you all, this one from a teacher.
What is the problem if you add phenothalein to an acid and it goes cloudy, when it should stay clear?
thanks

Hi Susie,

The reason why that the phenolphthalein is giong cloudy in acid is that acid is diluted with water, the more water present (More Dilute the acid is) the more the Phenolphthalein is dropping out of solution because Phenolphthalein solution is insoluble in water. Hence the cloudiness or opaque appearance.
