Measuring Cylinders

Post by bigmack »

We are looking at getting some replacement 50ml Measuring Cylinders .
My off sider was wondering about these Serrata ones that have a collar and plastic base .
They don't say they are borosilicate .

Sure they are cheaper than the other ones @ $4.95 ......but do they last ?

These are the other ones we normally get @ $6.00

I purchased the blue based ones. If they fall over and the sleeve plastic is not right at the top the measuring cylinder breaks fairly readily. They are not strong glass and I wouldn't buy them again.

I've also had experience with the base easily coming off the cylinder.

I agree - they have been a disaster. Waste of money and time. Stay with the old, tried and tested! The bases come off easily and then seem to stretch or shrink, can't get them back on!

EBAY all the way if you can do it - I bought over $70 worth of plastic and glass from ebay (would have been over $120 from australian suppliers) and only one broke in shipment and all free shipping!!!
100ml on ebay is $3.51

With thanks Kate :coffee:

Most of our measuring cylinders are plastic base and plastic collar. From 10ml through to 100ml. I have had very few problems with them and we have been using them for quite a long time. If one breaks I save the base and collar. That way if I have a base that breaks I usually have a replacement somewhere in a bits and pieces box. They are the only measuring cylinders that I buy now. We still have a few of the traditional ones but they don't get used that often.

Are they the old red ones, Lyn? I still have some of those and they are a LOT better than the new blue type.

We have used polypropylene cylinders for the junior school for the 20 years I have been here with no problems.
I keep the glass for the seniors

Bases - light red, dark red, yellow, white, green, purple, light blue, dark blue (current batch - 10ml & 25ml). Have yet to assess their staying power. But they are glass and yes they can self destruct (with a little help :whistling2: ). As for the bases yes I have had some split but it depends on the design. I have also swapped same coloured bases around for a better fit. There can be some slight differences in the thickness at the bottom of a measuring cylinder even if they have all been manufactured at the same time. (It's a bit like clothes, all the same size and make but some fit better than others.)
