POSITION - Science Laboratory Assistant

Good Samaritan Catholic College, Hinchinbrook is co-educational and caters to over 1300 students from Year 7 to Year 12. Our College motto 'Journeying with Compassion' derived directly from the 'Parable of the Good Samaritan' provides the underlying ethos of the College's Mission Statement.

The Science Laboratory Assistant works closely with the Science Coordinator to ensure the smooth running of the Science Faculty.

Applications are invited for a suitably qualified Science Laboratory Assistant.
This is a permanent, full-time position commencing January 2022.

Duties Include:
Prepare and maintain accurate laboratory records in accordance with file maintenance procedures
Maintain regular communication with Science department and Work Health and Safety Officer to maintain laboratory compliance
Preparation and clean-up of equipment used by teachers in practical classes
Preparation and clean-up of dilute solutions e.g. acids from concentrated bulk solutions, solutions from powers/solids
Prepare, maintain (includes ordering of required stock), organise, set-up and dismantle equipment and materials for routine experiments or student projects and dispose of waste materials as appropriate
Preparation and labelling of chemicals according to current protocols, including currency of MSDS
Ensuring adherence of the laboratory to safety and chemical legislative requirements
Provide effective assistance and practical support to Science Department Teaching staff, when required
Work closely with other laboratory assistants and academic teachers etc. to regularly review processes
Other duties as reasonably directed

Desirable Criteria:
Experience working in a laboratory and appropriate qualifications
Current First Aid Certificate
Experience using Compass

The following General Capabilities are applicable to the role:

Proficiency in RiskAssess risk management application
Proficiency in MS office and Google suite of applications
Well-developed interpersonal skills
Well-developed oral and written communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Strong organisational skills
Child Protection legislation requires the applicant have a current Working With Children Clearance.


To be employed in a Sydney Catholic School, all applicants must first obtain classification and accreditation through the application process.
