Bromine water

Hi all,
Just wondering, I have seen something on here about restrictions on Bromine water...........
Westlab (I think) sell 500ml bottles of saturated solution.
I'm a D of E school.....are we able to buy this or are we only to buy the ampoules?
I have also read that we shouldn't make a solution up from the ampoules, only a Chem person should????

Thanks for your input

We are not allowed to handle the ampoules any more, they should have gone to collection, a long time ago. westlab AG000-50500 is Bromine water at 50.70 for 500ml bottle.

Hi Labbie
Appendix B has bromine as a teacher only chemical and instructions on opening an ampoule (cool first). I still have 2 ampoules left and intended on using them up. Where does it say we are not allowed to have them any more?

I got this recipe for Bromine Water years ago of a discussion list -

BROMINE WATER. To 150ml of 0.2M potassium bromide add 0.15g of potassium bromate and 25ml of 2M hydrochloric acid.

We have made it up and teachers have been happy with it.

Bromine comes in a plastic bottle named Bromine liquid 1ml. Does anyone use this and if you do what needs to be done in readiness for class?
Any help appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Rita

Taken from page 59 CSIS" Toxic by all routes of exposure. Irritant vapour, skin irritant: corrosive. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when solutions are being prepared. Store in refrigerator (NOT FREEZER) Can be prepared by opening a bromine ampoule (1ML) under water (200ml) in a fume cupboard. The solution does not have a very long shelf life unless kept cool (days) Typically, student use should be limited to 2ml of 0.1M per activity, dropper bottles provide a good control on access. Used to test for unsaturated hydrocarbons. Students must use eye protection. 11 and 12 ONLY cas No. 7726-95-6 end of quote.

Just buy the Bromine Water. Don't try handling the bromine liquid capsule. As Labbie has described, the handling is tricky and not worth the trouble.

What is everyone using for this now days ?

I see Westlab don't list Bromine water any more ....well not that I could see.

Science Supply Austrailia are out of stock but its $135 + GST for 500mls .

MTA have it in stock but its $195 + GST

Seems ridiculous to have to spend around $200-$250 dollars including DG costs for a prac that uses a few drops . Wouldn't be so bad it it didn't go off before the next time you needed it . :-(

would consider it if I could just buy a tiny 50 ml bottle at a time . Perhaps that something Westlab could consider .

Science Assist has a recipe for making up Bromine water using bleach, 1M sulfuric acid and potassium bromide. We have used this. It also describes method of disposal. As for Science Assist you had better start downloading every bit of useful information that is on the site before it becomes extinct in December.

Thanks Lyn .Going to find that if I can .

BTW , did find Bromine water on westlab ....needed to log in to find it $158 for 500mls , $78 for expired date stuff .

I still think smaller supply amounts would be better for everyone ....including the environment .

Added around 4 small nickel spatula full of some Potassium Bromine that's nearly as old as me, while stirring .

Hi Bigmack

That one is better than the one I have for Bromine in Situ. Does it hold it's colour or do you have to make up fresh each time?

I've popped it in the cupboard . I showed Chem teacher this morning and it still looked the same colour.
Will check how it goes over the next week or so .
