Is there a setting I can change so when I click on a thread it automatically sends me to the first new post I have not read ??

Go to the Quicklinks link above the post on the left-hand side.

Then click Unread posts on the dropdown - this will display all your undread posts.

Or on the right hand side of the screen just above the top post there is a link you can click "First unread post"
