What temperature do you need to maintain? Would a heater for a tropical fish tank work?

It's been a few years since I had tropical fish, but I think the temp was set to around 30oC. The heater had a little screw thermostat that would let you adjust the temp up or down a few degrees either side of that.

What temperature was Nicky needing for her water bath?

Because the little fishes lives depend on having a constant temperature, the thermostats need to be pretty accurate, I believe.

I just set up a tank I think the temperature range you could set it to was 18-30.
You can get heater thermastat combinations for aquariums made of metal now which might last a bit longer than the glass ones.

I'm looking into this idea of a fish tank heater as a water bath option. What would you put it in? Just a tote tray? Does anyone know if 30deg is high enough for the fermentation prac? Perhaps I should be ringing around the pet shops...

Maybe 30deg is a little bit too high? Fermentation is supposed to happen at room temp. Too hot and you'll kill the yeast.

Yes. I am dreaming of those nice balmy summer days when it gets UP to 24 degrees. I took my daughter to a dentist appointment in Bowral on Tuesday and got SNOWED on!! :D

Fermentation does NOT work at 0 degrees!

Sounds funny, but you can get a heat ring for home brewing. Not too sure as to the cost though. It slips around the brewing vat. You can also get a heat mat that you sit the vat on. Check home brewing stores or websites. :giggle:

Sounds like we are acquiring a lot of sophisticated equipment for a prac that only goes for about a week each year. I wonder if you are allowed to use all this brewing equipment for other purposes during the rest of the year? I wonder what we could brew up? (Hic!) Maybe we could bring samples along to the dinner after the November "Labbies Conference"? Have a competition to see who gets tyhe best use of their brewing equipment? Take on Fosters-Carlton? Possibilities are endless!

WaterBaths

Post by LAZZA »

Hello All,

Looking to replace our Thermoline Waterbath because the heating element has stopped working :cry2: I was thinking of getting another Thermoline but I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions, as to other brands that they have tried and are happy with. I'm willing to give other brand names a shot.

Thanks a bunch,
LAZZA
