Colours of MSDS's

Post by Lis »

Hi All,
I am printing out some new MSDS's and I was wondering, along with everything else our brilliant minds remember, are we to note or learn the colours of the mini MSDS's? Only asking as I print everything on a B&W printer.
cheers Lisa

I think you will find, if it is a Orange dot chemical, then the Mini's come with a heading of orange. We do not have a colour printer here in Science, so i just put a Orange, Red, or Green dot on the MSDS Mini's.

I print my mini MSDS' on the appropriate coloured paper for the classification of the chemical.
you know, like Sodium chloride on blue, magnesium on green, sodium hydroxide on orange. Works well for us as it tells you at a glance the rating of the chemical.

that is a good idea  printing them on the correct colour page. Would make life that bit much easier when needing to use the MSD to know what colour it is. Thanks for a great tip. \:D/

yes, chemwatch, but the colour of the MSDS doesnt always coincide with the colour dot for the particular chemical, I was just wondering if the MSDS colour was relevant.

[quote="pommy"]I think you will find,

Perhaps Liz is right, perhaps it has nothing to do with the colour dot. Perhaps Yellow meaning oxidizing class, Red for class 3 flamable, etc.

No, I have my list I need to do, and I am doing them by categories, the range of colours is over the whole of the category, ie flammable solids have red, yellow and orange, oxidising have red, yellow, orange- metals have blue, yellow, orange- non haz have blue, yellow, orange. I always go by the coloured dots, I think I will keep it that way, K I S S principle

Hi all,
I printed out my MSDS's on white paper for non hazardous, and red for hazardous. I didn't think there was any stipulation for appropriate colour.
Cheers, Ellice.

hope when you are printing out your mini msds they are just for quick references and not for legal rights. Safety says that you have to have a full msds for each chemical held on site. the mini ones are only for handing out with the chemicals to go into classroom. i print mine out on white paper put a colour dot on it and then laminate so that they are not damaged. i only do this with chemicals that need special requirements if spilled or taken ( generally not blue dots).I hope this helps....

I believed that minis were ok so long as full msds were accessible, ie chemwatch, and that we didnt need paper copies, in saying that I always keep manufacturers msds when they are sent

don't know about you but our computers are tempremental and web is not always accessible as in case of a fire and server being down. as chemical ohs person for our school i store a hard copy where chemicals are and another in the front office incase a fire or large spill occurs where the actual chemical is and you cant get to it. emergency people also like to view hard copies and when our assessment was done they said it was required to have hard copies on site

We have a junior school, were main admin is, and the senior school, I have probably gone overboard with msds's, I have ALL in my prep room, including copies of D&T, canteen and office etc, then I have copies in each admin office, and each lab. The canteen have their own as do art, D&T, sick bay etc.
Were your hard copies all full msds's?

Hi Sue,
dont you think that is a huge waste of paper and resources, but seeing as that seems to be the way to go, I am going to put full msds, and only for hazardous chemicals, as per CSIS, on a CD and put a copy in the folder with my minis,

I Agree, but big BE's then us make the law, CSIS is only a guide line for us to read.

Good morning all
I have been reading everybody's posts on MSDS's.
Could somebody please tell me how often MSDS's should be re printed.
I printed all mine out about 12 months ago. Are they still ok?
I read through some of them last week and they read exactly the same as those I printed out 12 months ago. Do I need to print them again just to put a new date on them?
Thank you Kath

Hey Kath!
I believe MSDS' must be no more than five years old.
