I would love to know how many casual positions are out there for qualified lab techs for more than 1week at a time. I have had enough of the foot slog, lack of planning from teachers, lack of knowledge of what we do from Principal to HOD to SAM. The library assistants do nothing except wear high heels and pretty clothes and drink coffee and may be turn on the computer. They are viewed as more indispensible than the qualified test-tube washer who actually does type faster than any of the office staff. Does any one else have this feeling or is it just me?

Hi Adrianna,
After 20 yrs as a Lab Assistant I know where you are at.We are certainly undervalued in spite of our qualifications and skills.
In my last two positions I have been OH&S rep and this seems to be the trend to combine Head Tech and OH&S.....no extra money though!!
The way you are treated depends a lot on your HOD....my previous HOD was excellent and made a point of letting everyone know about my qualifications and experience and that I was a valued member of staff.Because we tend to be practical, competent people and not "precious" and whingers we tend to be overlooked.
Hang in there and don't be pushed around.

Thanks Judy

I will hang in there - as with you, I have been a lab tech for a lifetime - worked in industry (thats where you learn to work) with a Chemistry Cert.- I do like my job but hate the last minute needs of people who are paid twice my wage!
