If the 0.1 M uses 12.5mL of sulfuric, then 0.5M needs 62.5mL.

Re: AGAR
I make up 3-4% agar, so 15-20g into 500mL of water.
I dissolve agar in cold water and because we have an autoclave, I do not boil it. bring to about 70oC and put in autoclave.
11g should have set.

If you use this method, make sure its done in fume cupboard. Copper with acid nitric will produce dense brown fumes.

If not, they should be. They are the ones who want to do banned pracs and I have to insist that we cannot do it. eg lead oxide reduction with carbon. We now use copper oxide and get lovely coppery streaks of pure copper.

Re: Exposure to contaminated petri dishes
Thanks. I just had a talk with HOD about it, as we have 20plates" breeding" in an incubator. He agrees, but technically we are not DET school. All well and good, does it mean we can use any chemicals banned from DET schools? We must be held accountable for our actions? Very silly to segreg...

Hi Sue,
is there a document stating the ban in 2000? I cannot find it anywhere. One teacher here knows about it. It was introduced after one school has grown golden staph on plates from a toilet swab, yuck!!

Re: How many prac's in 1 day?
I have 14 booked for today and having to make up 30 agar plates as well.. I told teachers yesterday after 2pm, not to book anymore for today, so it is 14 :w00t: . But that is unusual, normally I would have about 7-8 a day. Still, I would not change my job with anybody. :clap3: Have a great weekend. ...

Lorrae,
I think water, and weak salt solutions will increase the size of egg, but golden syrup or conc salt and sugar solutions will decrease the size.
