Re: Food in labs
Yes, smoking was common in labs. I was working in a QC lab for a major food company in the 80s - there was strictly no smoking in the production area, so the plant operators came into the lab for a smoko. I tried to get the lab designated a no-smoking area, but failed to get management support.

We put a can of coke and a can of diet coke in a beaker of water, and they both float - the regular coke's supposed to sink. Is there something we're missing?

What's the best place to get light sticks? I usually go to cheapo stores, but the closest is a bit 'hit & miss'.

Re: Lugols Iodine
Lugol's I use is 1% w/v Iodine in 2% w/v Potassium Iodide solution (aqueous). Used as starch indicator - goes purple in presence of starch. Useful in brewing process to check whether starches in mashed grains have converted to maltose. Corrosive, but can be stored in dropper-bottles.

Re: riskassess
A few years back, a teacher asked me if the coloured dots on the chemical containers meant anything, so I explained the CSIS colour-coding system, and he's like - "you should make some charts and put one up in each lab" - so I say "I already have", and point out the one on the wa...

Re: PD days during holidays
I'm term time only too, and only attend PD days when it suits me, e.g. to keep my 1st aid certificate up to date or Free Lunch. The teachers here have 4 PD days starting a week before kids come back -that aint 'term time' in my book- besides, is listening to someone drone on about albeit riveting to...

Both are corrosive, but only the anhydrous form liberates HCl gas on contact with water - the hexahydrate having already reacted with water, cannot react.
