Re: Risk Assess - Legal Issue with signing
If you open the link at 'School's risk matrix' and scroll to page 5 of the document, there's a matrix copyrighted by Philip Crisp. This is the one we use, surely complies with all the doo-dahs?

Re: Chemical Store "odours"
Look out for butyric/butanoic acid. Years back, I discovered a 500ml bottle had eaten tiny pin-holes in the original metal lid, which I replaced with a plastic lid and stow the bottle in a larger container for good measure. HT used it for a an ester last month, and boy did the other teachers complai...

"If you use acetone wouldn't there be a chemical residue of some description left on the interior of the glassware?"
Not unless you re-using before its all evaporated off.

A squish of acetone after rinsing helps dry burettes and pipettes.

A teacher who has since moved on, entered this under Elephant Toothpaste on RiskAssess: 100mL 30% hydrogen peroxide saturated potassium hydroxide solution 1 x 500mL measuring cylinder dishwashing detergent I signed off after adding the following under Control Measures: using KI (not KOH) as per proc...

Get a plastic rat. They can remove the bits & pieces without gloves, and swap the sex organs. And it smells like plastic, not rat.

Re: Animals in schools
None atm, just ag plot. I've always been a part-timer here and never been asked to look after animals, except the odd injured bird. Past teachers have taken responsibility for hermit crabs, yabbies and stick insects in their labs. One was a Leading World Authority on yabbies, showed me a book he co-...

Re: what formal qualifications, if any do you all have?
I did the (old) Chemistry Certificate and post-cert Chemical Instrumentation at Sydney TAFE to pursue career as Technical Officer in govt. labs (toxicology) which I eventually chucked in for a local job. Less $ but also not spending 3 hours/day in Sydney traffic.

Re: GHS Labelling and frustrations with Chemwatch
I gave up using D-Gen after a few goes, and following the e-learny thingo. Just print page of the generic SDS containing the GHS phrases and pix, cut out and stick on container.

Re: Digital MSDS database?
Chemwatch is acceptable MSDS database for NSW Dept. schools (see post 'MSDS sorry').
SASC however insist on hard copies, and they prefer the manfucturer's SDS, some of which don't include GHS info, so I prefer the Chemwatch generics, but most of those go out of date on 1.1.2018
