I've just been asked for samples of acid, basic and neutral soils.
I'm thinking to just add vinegar for acid, calcium carbonate for basic.
Does that sound about right?
It's year 7 and they're looking at soil pH.

Thank you AnnNos, I'm now in FFX.
But it's so different to ChemGold3 it's going to take some getting used to.

When I tried to log on to CG3 today I got a message saying the user name I use has expired.
Is anyone else getting this?
Does the DEC have a new contract with Chemwatch?

Re: Making Phenol red solution
I'm just looking through my "Manual for School Assistants Working in Science". It has a chart for preparing acid/base indicators which uses 0.2g phenol red per litre 20% ethanol. This changes from yellow to red indicating pH 6.8-8.4. In the section "Reagents and Stains Used in Biology...

We seem to have lost the instructions.

Re: spikk kits
Thanks Sunray. So is that in each lab? preproom? chemstore? Does your kit contain a plastic dust pan and scoop? What about mini 'snakes' to contain spills? And the info I've been looking at says we need sodium bicarbonate for alkali spills and sodium carbonate for acid spills. I've got vermiculite f...

Re: spill kits
We have never had a 'spill kit' as such, but I went to an SRG conference last month and now I'm trying to organise a specific kit. It was put to the OHS committee that we needed it (so they'll pay for it), but my deputy (science trained) said that he's contacted four other schools and no-one knows a...

I googled 'Sephadex' and found 'GE Healthcare Life Sciences' who supply it in a variety of sizes - super fine to coarse - at upwards of $300 for 100g.

I'm following a prac I found which says 'amino acid samples in 1M HCl'.
I'll try a 10% solution in water as well.

Re: Chromatography of Amino Acids
Thanks, Rae, I've just collected it. It's useful for actually running the prac, but I still don't know how to prepare the amino acids. I'm going to (try to) dissolve them in 1M hydrochloric acid and take it from there. The teacher is still insisting on using ethanol as the solvent, so we'll see how ...
