Ammonium Nitrate is now a banned chemical in schools; terrorists use it for making bombs. There's another thread about it here.

Our previous HoD banned it, but it depends on the scale. Some gung-ho teachers use half a kg of sugar which even done outside, leaves you with a steaming black pile that's giving off SO3 fumes which is a hazard, especially for asthmatics. We now do it on a small scale in fume cabinet.

Yeah, I've set the alarms off here burning Mg in the Prep Room; leaving a door or window open with ceiling fans running avoids unnecessary drama.
