Re: "Where is it" database

We use excel for our Where Is It? book. I have used Access in the past and it wouldn't be any better than Excel for this list. I have it saved in the Science Staff drive and I print up a copy each year for the staffroom. Although that said, most of the staff still come and ask me where things are in...

Re: Reversible Reactions Prac?

My HT just completed this prac with his year 11/12 class. Although the prac he used didn't ask for conc. HCl at all, just water. After assessing the risks of using the chemical with this particular class, he implemented safety controls to reduce the risk to low and went ahead with the prac as writte...

Hi, we are looking at purchasing ours from Southern Biological. Similar setup cost to Stemreactor from the looks of things... any suggestions about the best suppliers for these?

Mine is going well, had my mid year review last term and passed with flying colours!

Don't forget to put down networking with other labbies. I'm sure Chemtalk counts for that one!!!

I'm with you on that one, what are they hoping to learn and/or achieve by making it?
We have said no to students in the past for this reason.

Re: Dehydration of sugar using sulfuric acid

Yes, we still do it here but only as a demo in the fume hood. It is a high risk prac, so our head teacher decides on a case by case basis whether he will approve the class teacher to conduct it or not.

Re: Eyes for dissection

We get ours from the local abattoirs, they kindly supply them to us free of charge :) You could also try a friendly butcher, although ours don't get bulls eyes in but they will supply pigs eyes if we are desparate enough to use them. We use bulls eyes because of the size, so much easier than pigs or...

Re: test tube holders

I was worried that the plastic ones would melt, now to find some wooden ones that have a strong spring! Sadly my teachers realy dislike the metal ones - our students tended to drop them a lot.

Thanks everyone for the info :)

test tube holders

Our lovely timber test tube holders are slowly being burnt away, and we need to replace them. We have some of the metal spring ones but none of the teachers are very keen on them. We purchased some new timber ones a couple of years ago but the springs were very weak and so they haven't lasted long a...

Re: WELCOME BACK EVERYONE

Hi everyone, I had a great break too! Not much done, just removed one more shade of green from my very small kitchen and sorted out my pantry. Back to work Sunday afternoon for day 1 of the Laughter and Wellbeing Conference run by our local SRG and then yesterday was a full day there. It was great! ...

Re: Phenolphthalein Agar

Here we go, finally remembered to take a pic of the trays we now use.

Each of the cubes is slightly larger than the size we actually want, to allow for shrinkage. We cut the red ones in half to make two 1cm cubes.

It took one 800mL batch to fill what you can see here.
