Re: Radioactive isotopes

I waiting for clarification at the moment. We only just bought a new set in 2021 I don't want to get rid of them and don't see a need to. Our Princple is going into back for us.

Maybe someone new that's freaked out without actually knowing.

Re: Disposal of used agar plates

I would get your school to invest in a pressure cooker. We put them in an oven bag then pressure cooker on high for 15 mins. They really should be destroyed under heat and pressure. Then they can safely go in the bin.

lead(II) nitrate <0.003 M (<0.1% wt/wt) 7-12 years
lead(II) nitrate 0.003-0.03 M (0.1-1% wt/wt) 11-12
lead(II) nitrate 0.03-0.18 M (1-6% wt/wt) and above including solid Teacher only
lead(II) nitrate 0.18-0.45 M (6-15% wt/wt)

that's according to Riskassess

Re: face shields

Hi Everyone, I realise this thread is very old wondering what everyone does in the event of a spill. I dropped a jar of Meruric Iodide this morning that went everywhere. Cleaned up with safety glasses, apron, gloves but all I had was a blue covid mask. I cleaned up and put into a new storage contain...

Re: Melting Plastic

Wanted to do in TAS rooms, but I've since spoken with 3 Chemistry teachers. Because I was made to feel like a fool, apparently there is still some fumes not as toxic but still enough that it really doesn't need to be done. This is for Polymers HSC Chem which is only touched on, the kids have already...

Melting Plastic

Afternoon everyone, any help or sugguestions for alternate practicals would be greatly appreciated. I have a teacher that wants to melt milk bottles in a saucepan over heat, apparently for year 12 chemistry. Would you be happy with this? or is there an alternative. Re: Chemicals not sold by Westlab or other common suppliers

If you have a good HT I'd take it to them, I'm always sus with anything benzene or bromine. See what he is doing with it and the cost alone of the new chemicals for a once off, may be enough of a deterrent.

Yep didn't take long, one email at 10.30pm last night didn't read till this morning. 3 teachers wanting pracs and saw the warning, they knew they were all pracs that were already made up so OKAY with that. Not the HT yet. They'll all realise they only have 9 days to go soon!!!! Then end of term yah!!!

You could try CSA Glencore Mine in Cobar NSW 0268365100 I'm sure they wouldn't mind sending you some if you explain it's for Educational purposes.

Let me know how you go. Cheers
