Re: Preserved specimens.
AGREED. We only bring these specimens out once a year so for that reason alone I will not be messing around with formalin Besides just the thought of touching those critters and the possibility that they may fall apart makes me want to vomit.

Re: Certificate course @ Bankstown TAFE
Well I'll be......TAFE finally got back to me and apparently that 2 year course of fairly intense science is only equivalent to a Cert II. So unless I spend around $2000 to upgrade to a cert 3/4 I am stuck..

Re: RiskAssess software
Are you aware of the CARA - Curriculum Activity Risk Assessments that has been brought in by Ed Qld. These can be filled out for the whole year, a blanket Risk Assessment for science, if that makes sense. There are about 6-7 to fill out and save to G: drive. We do this BUT also I get the teachers to...

:cheesy: Something similar happened to me a couple of months back. The VDG was on a workbench and I was standing on a chair and for some reason I got a massive zap through my shoe and scorched the top of my shoe black. :cry2: We think it might have been too close to a power socket. I did well to com...

We have approx 650 students, 5 labs, 9 science teachers and just me working full time
8-4 everyday. I dont know how you could manage 3 1/2 days, that would be a nightmare.

Re: objects of different mass and sizes
We use wooden blocks with hooks screwed into the end, they also have sandpaper glued to the bottom for a different surface. The weights are the brass weights with the hook and they can just add or subtract the weights when needed.

If we need to use magnesium powder I just cut up the ribbon really really small. No complaints so far in fact it was the chem teachers idea.

Re: pH meters
I purchased 2 pen type pH meters from wiltronics $55.00. They are great they are little and can be taken out in the field without having to take the whole data logger etc. Very reliable although the cherubs broke the electrode in the first week :redcard: but you can buy a replacement for $35.00. Too...

Re: How to make nutrient agar
I keep my peptone in the fridge and it has kept for 12 months, my last lot was a solid lump Do not use gelatine as an alternative, it has a very low melting point approx 34oC or there abouts from memory, you will end up with a running mess. Learnt from experience, one teacher thought it was a fantas...
