Re: Burettes

We tried honey with "frozen" taps on a voltameter and it did work with one of them After suggestions on this site we also tried paraffin, oil, tapping, hot water/ cold water, WD40 etc etc on the other and were about to give up. One of the teachers gave it an almighty wallop on the bench on...

Re: New DG Class

Thanks Robb, for that but why then has the manufacturer put the corrosive 8 diamond on the product?? It's enough to confuse anyone - when do we believe what is then on the container?? We've never considered it to be corrosive before!

Re: New DG Class

Sorry, don't know why the "smiley" came up when I pressed 8 for DG class - gremlins in my computer??

New DG Class

We've just received an order of sodium silicate (waterglass) and I notice that this chemical is now classed as corrosive (DG class 8). I checked the Chemwatch database but it is still listed as NDG! I've now stored it with the corrosive chemicals. Has anyone come across any other changes for relativ...

Re: Disposing of Preserved Specimens

I absolutely agree with this one. We have a lot of OLD specimens as well and there's no way I'm opening them up and changing chemicals etc The chemical pickup, whenever that may be, sounds the best bet for disposal of any unknowns!

Re: Some Light Relief

Ah yes, I'm sure we've all heard these before. My favourite is when there is a pupil free day and in the morning (when I have time) there are of course no pracs on the board. During the afternoon, when I'm involved in my sessions, and they have faculty time, nearly every one of them put up their pra...

Re: Tubing for Bunsen Burners

Yes I thought we were advised to use clear tubing for the reasons you mentioned but the last time I ordered clear tubing, Q Stores sent me the RUBBER tubing instead. When I checked the catalogue (mine is 2006) the tubing listed for bunsens was the rubber not the clear. The rubber is 8 mm internal di...

Re: Pasteur experiment glass tubing

Just a thought. Rather than trying to bend the tubing why not just use a short piece of straight tubing to pass through the cork / rubber stopper and then attach a shortish piece of rubber tubing which can than be curved into a loop, securing with sticky tape or string. Works for us!

Voltameter tap

Hi, I know this has been asked before, but here goes. While I was on leave, the taps on our voltameter seized open! I've tried all sorts of ways suggested including hot / cold water, paraffin, gentle tapping and the honey method described in a past forum (this actually worked with one of the taps) h...

Junket Prac

We're having all sorts of problems sourcing junket tablets here for the Yr 12 assessment determining the effects of temperature on an enzyme. We contacted all the supermarkets from Lismore to Ballina without success plus pharmacies etc. We contacted Hansen's, the manufacturer but no reply as yet. Lu...

Tapers

I'm also a fan of the skewers. They're easy to get hold of and cheap. Best of all there are no wax drips and anything that minimises wax clogging up the bunsens gets my vote!

Thanks for the feedback. We do have a Griffin filler which we're happy with. The rest are an assortment who knows what brand. I think we'll persue the Griffin ones Thanks for your help!

Here on the Far North Coast of NSW, we have a Science Collegiate group which meets once a term, usually on a Wednesday, when most of our schools do sport. We include public, private and Catholic schools and find it a great networking tool. We each have a turn to host the meeting beginning with a lun...

Pipette Fillers

Does anyone out there know a supplier of reliable pipette fillers?? Our Chem teacher doesn't like the Pi pump style filler, preferring the rubber types. We've bought from several suppliers over the years and generally only use them once a year when Yr 12 are doing their titrations. Each time, though...
