Re: how often do you clean chem stores?
I never spend time cleaning the chem store, apart from occasionally sweeping the floor. I'm going through the chem store at the moment, working out what needs to be re-labelled. So the things that haven't been used in a while are covered in dust - good chance to dispose of things that are taking up ...

Wow, well done! You can hang out in my prep room any time you like - I'll give you all my "problem" bits of equipment to sort out.

No problems, but please thank Debbie for putting this together, it is a great booklet.

Re: Another GHS question...
We have hard copies. One set in the science prep room that are available to all science staff and another master set (with all the SDSs for the whole school) in the front office. The problem with electronic copies is what happens if there is a power failure, internet/server problems and the SDSs are...

You're right Rae, Science Assist has some really useful information available and a good place to go for expert advice. We need to keep using it, otherwise it will go away...

Re: Find a GHS labeled product challenge
Interesting - in NSW if we have contractors not complying with legislation, we are obliged to discontinue the contract. Basically ask them to mend their ways immediately, or ask them to leave.

Re: Another GHS question...
Firstly, I take it that the manufacturer's name goes on what they have "manufactured". They are not the manufacturer of a solution/dilution in a dropper bottle. Secondly, I agree with what Linotas says about the minimum information required. As I have said many times (sorry if I'm repeatin...

Is it really that bad, Cindy? I thought she must have been exaggerating. Oh dear! Well at least you know it isn't you. Have you been able to buy more seals? I think she was buying them on-line.

Re: Find a GHS labeled product challenge
After January 17 you could send them back at the supplier's expense. The code of practice for labelling (p.5) says that the "supplier must not supply a hazardous chemical...if the supplier knows, or ought to reasonably know, that the chemical is not correctly labelled". Before then, they s...

Re: Another GHS question...
This topic is sure getting tricky!! By "brought into use" does he mean the minute it's out of the storeroom to be used......? If that's the case, then it needs to re-labelled, doesn't it, because if it's in the store and never comes out it means we don't use it, which means it doesn't nee...

I found them in their printed catalogue, but they're called "dangerous goods stickers". Two sizes 20x20mm and 50x50mm.

I guess we stayed tuned. Like I said earlier, I have had no advice from the people in our system who should be helping us. Even after asking for help, I still don't get anything. Worse still, they don't reply to my emails. So when they forwarded on the details about the safety training course, I too...

Re: Another GHS question...
Type in http://www.safework.nsw.gov.au Type in 'GHS what you need to know factsheet' in the search bar on page 4 it says existing chemicals that you intend to keep past 31/12/2016 do not need to be relabelled. This in for NSW. So I am only relabeling dropper bottles and decanted bottles. Regards Tr...

Re: Chemical Store "odours"
Yes, it does make sense, Rae. I'll get the technician to check, but I don't always trust the company we use - ask a question like that and we're bound to need an "upgrade". To me, the chem store looks good, could probably do with better lighting but it's not completely inadequate. There ar...

Chemical Store "odours"
Just wondering what other people's chemical storerooms are like. My coordinator keeps complaining that there are too many odours in our chemical store. This is worse when the flammables cupboard or the corrosives cupboard is opened. Which to me makes sense - the containers will never be 100% airtigh...

Re: Another GHS question...
The labels that Westlab sell are just the pictograms. GHS relates to hazardous chemicals. The SDS from the manufacturer will tell you if it is hazardous or not.

Re: Storing Alligator wires
We have 8 prac groups in each class, so I've put 8 leads into the rectangle take away containers. They nearly always come back in a mess that I have to sort out, but at least it is easy to stack them neatly on the shelf once I've tidied them up. I like the clip idea, though. All my leads are now jus...
