Re: A suitable demo?

Our teachers do this demo. Is done in a fume hood and a lab tech is always on hand. We use smaller quantities though. I can't see an issue with it.

Re: Using weight to find volume

I would imagine that for high school science either weight or volume would be accurate enough. This is where the % w/w or % w/v etc comes in. If you're weighing both it would be % w/w and if weighing the solid and measuring the liquid it would be % w/v. Mixing two liquids (eg Hcl) would be % v/v. H...

Re: Victorian Gov Chemical Register

For the Consequences/Likelihood, there is information on one of the tabs, it also says The level of risk can be assessed as per the directions below and in reference to Section 3.5.2 of the OHS Risk Management Procedure. Also, you will not find anywhere a column telling you what Consequences/Likelih...

Re: Victorian Gov Chemical Register

Make sure you have downloaded and working in Excel. If you are trying it in a google doc it won't work and you'll be in all sorts of pain. I also just downloaded the blank template to check it out... the first line does not work for some reason (as in picking the Risk ranking automatically) after yo...

I believe the source sets that are available through our suppliers... when they are past their active date you can peal off the stickers and they can go in the bin.

We have not been given a directive to get rid of any of our sources.... all super safe anyway.

Oh my, what a disaster, glad it is going from your site. We also don't have it here. I have one of these with the appropriate filter for the nasties' I have onsite here. I can't remember the code off hand but I have a fine particulate canister and an acids or organics canister attached. You can mix ...

You can get Bromine from Merck (very expensive for a once off demo), we only have the Bromine water on site... I have said 'no' to requests for anything different.

Is all of them or just one or two ? Sounds like you have done pretty much all you can . If they are the ones with Teflon tips , I’m thinking the tip is damaged . You could try slicing a small bit off the end as parallel as you can with a Stanley knife . Failing that , the round filing cabinet might...

Re: Chemicals not sold by Westlab or other common suppliers

Has anyone ever bought from Sigma? We used to get lab supplies from them all the time when I worked in medical research, but not sure about for a school. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago with a science extension student. Setting up the account was very easy. I contacted one of the...

Re: Limit on number of Practicals done each week?

I just worked out our service factor (after figuring out what that was!) and it is 0.248! Although I do feel very busy (says me spending time here! :cheesy: ), I can't see it would need to be as high as 0.8. I would have nothing to do! And it's kind of my fault I am so busy as I was employed at 3 d...

Interesting... That's what we had at my prevous school (0.1 and 1M) but they seem to use a variety of concentrations here! Maybe because they were just "there"? I don't know... we've got 5M, 6M and 2.5M of some things.... I just thought maybe things had changed over the years I wasn't wor...
