I've attached the labels I use. These match the CSIS disposal methods. The second attached document summarised the waste disposal procedures, because many people don't have access to CSIS.

You could try gel electrophoresis in a butter container with agar & separate inks or dyes. simple cheap & it works really well. Details at:

There is a good paper called "Microbiology Safety Considerations" on Southern Biological's webpage (http://www.southernbiological.com) under Microbiological Specimens. It explains the use of broths and how to spread a lawn plus many other useful things about how schools can do micro safely...

You should have no problem flaming the neck of a plastic vial. Its not as if the vial is in the flame for long and the plastic vial is probably autoclavable anyway!

Agar Gel electrophoresis for forensic science

Gel electrophoresis can be done in a butter container with equipment you are likely to have at school. It works really well with food dyes or texta ink. The instructions can be found at:

There is an easier way to make Bromine Water:

In a beaker, in the fume cupboard, mix the following ingredients:
4.4g NaBr
21 ml 2 M HCl
30ml 4% Sodium Hypochlorite
28 ml distilled water

Keep is tightly closed bottle & store in the fridge. This is safer than transporting it ready made.
