Re: sodium thiosulphate - and HCL
Use for classic rate of reaction experiments, to show/measure how temperature and concentration effect the rate. Use 2M HCl and 0.25M sodium thiosulphate. The two chemicals react to form a sulphur colloid makingthe solution cloudy. The time taken for the precipitate to obscure a cross marked on a pi...

Thanks for the warning reminder.
In the Top End (of NT) it pays to be vigilant and take heed of warning signs.

Thanks for the replies.
So is OK to use and I don't have to worry about disposal. Can use it to make a carbon pillar with sugar!

Conc Sulphuric Acid
Decanted Sulphuric acid concentrated, put into a smaller dropper bottle for student use, goes dark colour after some time. Is it still OK to use?
Used for ester preparation.
Thanks

Anyone who can, should be there!
Lots of friendly lab techs happy to share and lots of great workshops.
Feeling left out as I will not be there myself, and remembering my wonderful visit a couple of years ago

Thanks NT,
I'll keep your advice in case the another new chemistry teacher wants to use it. And I'm sure useful for others.
Winge. With turnover of teachers we seem to suffer here, I never know what prac they might want to do or need to resurect ones done years ago.

Alcohols are not a good idea in plastic burettes either. They dissolve, as one teacher found out.

Sterilize swabs.
I put two cotton buds in small test tube. Stopper with cotton wool. Put them in a brown paper bag and "cook" them in the oven at 160 degrees for about an hour. Glass ware, for example test tubes or petri dishes can be treated same way.

Re: Lugols Iodine
Lugols iodine is used to preserve algae . The iodine solution is added to the sample so it looks like weak tea. The algae are killed and sink to the bottom and then this can be subsampled. Best though is looking at fresh live specimens as you can view motility and their real colour. The KI of Lugols...

Re: Aceto-orcein stain for nucleic acids
Thanks Noona I have now read the entry in The Laboratory, properly this time and it answered my queries with a bit more detail. I will recomend using a microscope lamp to heat the slide, instead of a hotplate as writen in the Key ideas in Biology (NT) prac booklet Best wishes Rosalie (another one) :D

I found it at Westlab (Vic) It is expensive $45 for 30cm square and mesh is quite fine. I would have thought flywire mesh size more suitable. What does Rita use?

Where do i store my preserved specimens which are in 70% alcohol? General store or Chemicals store? And if in the chem store should they be in the flamables cupboard (where there is not enough room anyway)? At present they are in the general store room.

labels for dilute solutions
I have access to Chemgold 3. If I want to use a label for diluted solutions of chemicals e.g. 0.1 M Hydrochloric acid, the only label availaable is for the concentrated solution. Am I missing something? What do other people use for class sets of chemical solutions. I have been using Label Maker from...
