If you have access to the Risk Assess program you will have information on that site to help you in your disposal choices.

Re: White crystal around sodium hydroxide solution bottles

Just wipe the white stuff away from the neck of the bottle with a damp cloth or if the plastic dropper lids are clogged take the lid off open it up and run tap water through to get rid of residue and dry lid before replacing on bottle. With the plastic dropper bottles check to make sure there are no...

Re: potassium manganate?

Sorry Rosalie, I should have done a bit more research. Yes you are right that they are two different chemicals. It is interesting that it only comes up with the potassium permanganate on the ChemSupply site. I hope your potassium permanganate/oxygen practical went well.

Re: potassium manganate?

Just did a search on ChemSupply Safety Data sheets and potassium manganate comes up as potassium permanganate. So you will be okay to use potassium permanganate for a simple heating demonstration of producing oxygen and relighting a glowing splint. The other method of making oxygen is a little more ...

Re: Instead of Matches.......

I have a teacher who is insisting on gas lighters instead of matches. I believe they may become a hazard in kids hands. Does anyone out there have any information on the safety issues with these lighters. Or give me any further feedback regarding their use in the science lab.

What is the practical that he is doing that needs to use jelly beans? I also would definitely NOT use methanol as a bittering agent. If you have heard of tourists overseas becoming extremely ill/poisoned after drinking dubious alcoholic beverages, that is the ingredient that has been added to the al...

When I saw the heading "Heating lead" my first reaction was NO,no,no,no,no. Not for heating. Seriously don't even put them out for the senior classes. I do however have lead electrodes, some lead sheet (to make electrodes) and bottles of lead shot that nobody has ever asked for or used in ...

Re: Purchasing Mercury

I have been required to dispose of anything that either uses mercury or has mercury in it, all mercury thermometers, a constant volume apparatus (not sorry to see that go it was so old), a hydrometer, etc. I have no idea what the chemistry teacher expects to use for any practicals using the Quikfit ...

Don't you need cobalt chloride to be able to make up cobalt chloride paper to detect changes in humidity?

Re: Copper Sulfate Crystals Take Home?

Got onto this thread two days late. Absolutely NO to copper sulfate crystals going home and yes it has happened, one child's younger sibling did think that the copper sulfate crystal was a lolly and ingested it. Can't remember which state it was or what the final outcome was but since learning of th...

Re: Destroying Aluminium Oxide layer

Try one part vinegar and one part water. A quick search on the net found that. Let us know if it works. Seriously why can't the teacher look for alternatives. On another note all of our mercury products have been removed as chemical waste and the last of our mercury thermometers are now ready to go ...

We have had Risk Assess for a long while now (only the main subscription) and it has been incredibly useful. For me in particular the timetabling aspect of the program is invaluable. Merilyn1, you need to point out to your new teacher that by law he has to do a risk assessment for any and every prac...

Dried peas. Roughly same size as your polystyrene balls. If they don't get wet they will recycle for years. Unless of course they get a bad attack of weevils. :cheesy: Sorry, it's that time of the year. Keep them stored in a glass container with lid. Mine have survived for years and are still useabl...

Found this yesterday arvo. The same as mtg's recipe. To a 1 litre flask add 10g sodium hydroxide 10g glucose powder 1ml methylene blue solution (1%) 500ml water Cap with tightly fitting stopper Shake the flask vigorously. I will try the diluting of 2M NaOH and see how well that works. It's always us...

Re: what weird/quirky things do your teachers ask of you?

We have done the crater practical outside the science labs. Had a large dirt area at the back of the middle school labs where the industrial bin was kept or it was done on a grassed area away from student traffic. Saves on cleanup and the labs are flour free. Just had to make sure that all the aster...

It's basically a quick drive into town bypassing the slow coach drive on the Stuart Highway which is the main highway from the t...
