Re: PLEASE BE CAREFUL
I understand that you want the chemicals gone. We are fortunate in the north west that they have a chemical disposal once a year - but yes you do have to deliver them. I did this a few years ago and it was so cheap for the school, and sooo good to have a tidy chem store. BUT check with your SAM that...

Re: Molarity Calculations
Hi Anne-Marie I have asked our chemistry teacher, and the answers are on a teacher resource disc. BUT the answers to this worksheet are not included. Maybe they are easy! The comment was made that even the student should be able to work it out. But at the same time, answers are there for most other ...

Its full name is Eriochrome Black T. Another name is Mordant Black 11. You can't make it up if you don't have it! Ask him for a substitute. Your can't pull it out of thin air - well not without notice.

Re: Sterillising agar plates.
Some people nuke 'em in a microwave oven. Don't know how effective this is.
OR You could do what one labbie I know does. Tie 'em up in a plastic bag and put in garbage. She can't see the difference between them and food that has come out of some people's fridges and school bags

Re: Audit time
From memory, the PSA insisted the the role of the co-ordinator must be done by a teacher. This is appropriate in that they have the relevant expertise and reward (salary) to take on this role. The faciltator for training in the CSIS package should be done by the relevant head teacher or an experienc...

Re: cleaning/fixing bunsens
Well, they are a really simple machine. If you can unscrew the the barrel, all you have is the hole where the gas comes out. This is the bit that gets blocked up. Run it under the hot tap to get rid of any wax etc. and brush if necessary. Get a narrow needle/piece of wire (a piece of the multi-stran...

Thanks for the tip I didn't know and I've been doing this job for over 16 years! Just how do you use it? Not sure I can entirely picture it.

Re: Help with chemical stocktake
From my experience they will only want a current stocktake. I think they only look for the fact that you have a list of chemicals available in the front office. They have never checked the accuracy of the stocktake here. You may need to have a list of the chemicals that you wish to dispose of when t...

Thanks for the tip, where to get the containers. I have put in an order today. I don't want to run out. They do last well, and particularly for the price. They do go brittle after a long while but all in all I like them.

Re: Ebony Rods
I think the rods are actually ebonite, possibly or probably made from bakelite! All the ones we use are smooth and shiny. The ones we have in store and not used yet are dull. Are you using the correct cloth with the correct rod? Ebonite with wool and perspex with silk.

Re: Standard stock soultions
I use plastic 2.5l bottles - gerry can style. They are lighter and with a handle, so much easier. BUT... I am running low on stocks, and can't see them in Q stores anymore. ANY plastic bottle is more comfortable and easier to transport, (if you can find them.)

Re: rats
Hi Rosalie I got rats from our pet store in Gunnedah for about $2 ea! I think. Anyway they were cheap, (maybe $5). They were frozen food for snakes, as has been mentioned. Although they were smallish, the bio teacher said they were fine. So I would imagine one of your pet stores in Tamworth would ha...

HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, & NaOH - 0.1, ,1,2, (have a fair bit made up 2L plus some 500ml and 250ml containers of each.) 0.5m (a couple of 500ml ) and 4 & 6m - 250ml. I don't have as much HNO3 made up as we don't seem to use as much of this, but still have the variety. It has all been governed by de...

No it has to be agar. I tried it many years ago, as agar is expensive and had lots of gelatine. Didn't work.

This might be quite dumb and just a thought, haven't tried it, but could you put some hydrogen peroxide on it? Should fizz if its blood, but I don't know about the vegemite.
