Re: GHS labels

I would not be worrying about the labels just yet... I still have not heard anything from 'official channels' - only what's been said on here. If the labels aren't available, then we can't really be expected to have them can we? If you have time to make up your own then go for it but I for one do no...

You can also get them from CSIRO at a fraction of the price. Google Wisconsin Fast Plants Australia and you'll find more info.

I used them at uni - they were great! Haven't used them at school though. I did talk the teachers into trying them next time they were doing their seed growing prac but then they took it out of the programs...

Re: Lab Assistant's Protection

My understanding is yes, the rules have changed. Everyone is responsible for everything! If you see something wrong/unsafe, you MUST report it to the person in charge or fix it or whatever. BUT having said that, it has also changed that the 'victim' (for want of a better word) now must prove you wer...

Re: Microscope light bulb

Do you have a specialist lighting store like Cetnaj or something? Ask there. They have little books with pictures in so even if they don't have it in stock they can order one if you still have the original.

You get honest responses when you use butyric acid! But a perfume or essential oil bottle is much nicer on the nostrils (and stomach!)

Re: Dissection scissors

someone else on here suggested cutting steel wool with them sharpens them or else alfoil folded over several times instead. I haven't tried it yet but I'm planning to someday!

Re: Resistors

We get all of ours from Wiltronics. We get the little wooden ones rather than ceramic but there has been a lot of discussion on here (I think) about them. Do a bit of a search and then go back to the teacher armed with knowledge :) like Ocker said, they need to tell you which ones to get. If you hav...

Re: Where to get CSIS?

Do you know how much it costs? I think they would want the whole thing (both folders). They will need to read up on all the (14 years old!!) information on what can and can't be done, disposal, and all the rest of it so they can get their labs set up correctly from the start.

Where to get CSIS?

Hello NSW state school labbies! I need your help please! I am in an independent school and we follow CSIS. One of the teachers from here left at the end of last year to work in another independent school as a principal and they are just moving up into starting year 7. He rang me for some advice on l...

Re: Broth for Pasteur experiment

Has anyone tried chicken necks? Usually I boil up the chicken wing dissection leftovers from year 8 for this prac as they have been on around the same time. Unfortunately the teachers are now working on the new curriculum so everything has changed!! No chicken wing pracs in conjunction with Pasteur'...

It only changes by a few mm as well, so if the marker line is too thick that may make it difficult to see as well.

Re: riskassess

You could possibly just create a blank RA. Our room bookings go off a different computer program that all staff use. With the labs and risk assess we only use it for pracs/equipment requests. To do a 'blank' RA, Just call it CSIRO visit, and in the reference section write "Lab in use all day. N...

Re: Diffusion and osmosis prac yr 11

How long have you left it? From memory it takes a few days for it to be noticable. Failing that, try it with a stronger starch solution and see if that works.

The only advantage of starting pink and going clear is that the kids can see it as it happens whereas when you put it in clear and turn it pink they don't see it till they cut it open. I use a plastic dropper tray thanks to someone else on this site. I leave the divisions in and the kids get on squa...
