Re: Fume hood on windy days

Get it checked out... on windy days even with ours off they go into alarm when they get a downdraft, this tells me they are working beautifully.

Same our droppers are always being topped up or cleaned out and refilled. I only label the 'mother' bottle.

Re: Radioactive sources -safe disposal

The Cs-137 generator is actually really handy, I'd be surprised if you couldn't find another school in Tas to take it off your hands. It's a fast, simple, safe and clean way to show radiation decay in the classroom. I'd take it from you but we already have 2. I would ask your science teachers to con...

Re: Hanging up my lab coat

Hi All After lots and lots of consideration, deep thought and prayer, I have decided to hang up my lab coat one last time and step down from my labbie job here at Wollondilly Anglican (Tahmoor NSW). I will be focussing on my WHS role. Means I'll be here two days a week and I'll be going back to my ...

Re: Lab upgrade ideas 2024

You could always go the open cupboard style with Gratnells trolleys for equipment, that way when not in use stashed under benches and easily moved to other laboratories when needed so you never have to double up on things.

How may labs do you have ?

Re: Cleaning stock bottles

We send out smaller bottles as they can come back contaminated, we know the sketchy classes :( If we sent the large one, then the whole lot would be cactus. Also the larger the bottle the more that gets wasted.

Ahhh I see, we seal with blutak and would use a smaller temperature differential so I guess the shorter length works. Good idea sourcing more.

Tubing Borosilicate Glass, 5mm x 0.5m pk/10
Thanks. Haines doesn't seem to have any with capillary size inner diameter. I think I want about 1mm internal diameter.
Glass pasture pipettes would do the job, snap off the end bit :)

Going through ours ATM There are Hydrogen Peroxide ones for 3% ,6%,9% and 35% . (LOL all from Chemwatch of course ) I see they are stored in the fridge . Now it seems that the lower strength ones are in Risk assess labeled bottles and presumably made from diluting down the 35% solution . I was unde...

Re: Neutralisation of HCl

As a basic rule , if you have a litre of 1M HCl you can pretty well neutralise most of it with 1litre of 1M NaOH . If you have 1litre of H2SO4 1M it will take 2litres of 1M NaOH or 1Litre if 2M NaOH .(because Sulphuric has twice as many Hydrogens ) But …….. iff’n you are going to sit there and test...
