Re: Smeg dishwasher GW0160

Oh wow. I just had a look. What a machine!!! Sorry I can't offer advice on racks. With the right combination, you might never wash anything up again!

tiny science labs

Hi all, I'm looking for feedback on the tiny science lab kits from a lab assistant perspective. I went to a PD on Friday (thanks Andrea if you're on here!) and saw these kits. We used them and they were so easy, quick, organised, all-round-amazing! Our school is growing quickly and obviously science...

Re: magnesium in burettes

We have those!! I have never seen them used and didn't know what they were for - after seeing the pictures it makes perfect sense! I will definitely suggest that for next year.

What a beautiful school!! It looks like a wonderful place to work. If only I wasn't so happy where I am now! Make sure you check in now and then when you stop for a cuppa :coffee: you and your valuable expertise will be missed! :cry2:

Re: Biurets reagent

Jumping in on an old thread here... I have been asked for Biuret Reagent. According to "The Laboratory" it is 10% NaOH and 0.5% CuSO4. Do you give it out in the 2 bottles or do you mix it together? I don't remember if I've ever made it, but I'm sure at my old school we had a bottle of it m...

Re: Pluck practical Yr11

Fine in NSW and QLD too . Mind you , a pluck up in NSW and QLD is really a half pluck . No stomach and intestines ….. just lungs hearts etc . We did get a full pluck once from one of teachers hubbys slaughtered sheep and she bought it in . That was not my problem .LOL . Just remembered looking out ...

Re: magnesium in burettes

Sorry I didn't explain very well. They'll only get 1M HCl and still only use 25ml in the 50ml burette.

magnesium in burettes

Hi everyone, I'm just looking for tips in advance for the prac (assessment task for yr 11 chem) where they put 25ml HCl in a burette top it up to 50ml with distilled water, then place some magnesium in the end so it stays there on its own, and then invert the burette into a beaker of water and wait ...

copper contamination of lime water

I have a winchester full of lime water and someone thought it was the copper waste bottle. The copper should have precipitated out into copper hydroxide so if I filter it, (which in itself will take a long time due to the fine particles of calcium hydroxide) I will have a big pile of copper hydroxid...

Re: Brains, hearts, kidneys & plucks

Our local butcher told me they can't get the body parts because the abattoirs don't have enough staff to spend the extra time getting all the bits out carefully to not damage them. That is why they are getting more expensive as well. We had trouble sourcing eyes, but I have now found an abattoir at ...

Re: Cleaning Glassware Fast!

Its not just the excessive number of test tubes, but also the amount of horrible chemicals that you then have to dispose of. Are they doing the experiment individually, or with partners? Unfortunately they have to do it individually for their half yearly exams :banghead: We're only going to use 5-6...

It might also be worth checking with the teacher that the request is correct and they don't mean 60 total for the 10 students, not 60 each. That sounds excessive!

Re: Cleaning Glassware Fast!

Thank you Rosalie!! I'm afraid they might not come in fast enough (my school's ordering department takes a while to process) :cry2: Disposable test tubes would be a great idea though! I'm not sure if plastic disposables are suitable for use of the above chemicals, would they be okay? If so, I think...

Re: Cleaning Glassware Fast!

I don't know if this is an option, but you can get 500 micro test tubes from wiltronics for $20. I think I would get these and bin them! Except I just looked them up and they are out of stock :cry2: Sorry! Westlab has some though. Not quite as cheap. Box of 1000 for $46.50 for the smallest ones. Se...

Re: Distilled water, lead nitrate and chloride ion contamination

I have 2L demineralised water bottles from when we used to purchase it at the supermarket that I refill using water from our still. I also have 2x 5L plastic jerry can style bottles I bought for that purpose as well. Generally I send the squeezy bottles out when distilled water is requested and if I...

Re: Glass tubing

Look up 2ml serological pipettes with your suppliers. I found some cheaper ones the other day but don't remember where (I can't open the link either). They come in plastic or glass. Great suggestion, Rosalie! I found some 0.2mL ones that we already had and it worked perfectly! :clap3: I also tested...
