Re: glass tubing
Hey Smeee, I have previously set up a bee-you-tiful demo for this, using a broken burette and/or a broken 50mm gas tube. I'm at home, so I can't show you a pic, but try to picture this: We got a very long thin piece of OHP acetate from an antiquated OHP roll, from when those things were still used, ...

Re: Risk Assessments
We have a vision impaired student as well. I have made it a bit of a campaign for her successive teachers to acknowledge her presence in each prac request they do thru RiskAssess. They at least have to indicate that they acknowledge that she is in the class, and what modifications, if any, that the ...

Re: Risk Assessments
RiskAssess every time. Can't recommend it enough. It covers all the bases, and most importantly of all it makes the Teachers consider each experiment and each class on a case by case basis. We've been using it for more than 12 months now, so for lots of our classes the teachers simply have to find t...

Re: First day back and not happy
Hey David, Had the same thing happen to me when the HNIC turned off everything in my prep-room after a power outage. Trouble was in those days I didn't work Fridays, AND it was a long weekend! SO...I lost a whole ox liver, rats, toads, and preciously imported-from-Gympie dissection hearts. We had a ...

Butterflies are THE hardest to do, because so much of their display is in their tiny little scales. However, there was a techie up here who was running a sideline in embedding. I'll see if I can track her down.

I use Berocca cans and they work marvelously! We use 1 Aspro Clear and about 1 cm of water. The cans do need rinsing afterwards, but they seem pretty hardy.

What about using Potassium Aluminium Sulphate, or even Magnesium Sulphate? I have used both of those for crystal growing - just not up here! Waste of time, especially this end of the year!

Yes it is a great read, but not too surprising really. One of the ways they communicate is to vibrate the water, and the intensity of the vibration indicates mood/size etc. Kind of like snakes on the ground, they seem to be able to detect what is potential prey in the water, and what is just a branc...

OK, lots of tech talk available on the net, but here's the basic info: Activated carbon powder is the very fancy industry name for carbon with lots of surface area on the particles - in other words very fine carbon powder. This "activated" powder can be bound with a "binder" - re...

Well, on the topic of tourists, our Council has just issued a list of road closures, and absolute no-go areas. Anyone who isn't on a booked, paid, organized tour will not be allowed to go to beaches A, B & C for traffic reasons, etc etc. Our mad scientist teacher here has already emailed the aut...
