Re: Microwave ovens

Hey! that Autoclave Indicator tape is really great! 8-) One of our teachers is moving on at the end of this term to take on "Head Teacher" at another school. I came in after recess to discover that several of his big packing boxes were very securely taped up with Indicator Tape!!!! (at $22...

Serrata sell an Activated Carbon filter (for abour $64 and a Mixed Bed Resin filter for about $85. My understanding is that you need BOTH. The charcoal filter removes sediment, chlorine and organic compounds and the Resin filter removes "ionised disolved solids and gasses" (hence "De-...

Re: Tin II Chloride

I would have thought that you would EITHER add tin to HCl to get Tin Chloride (Acid + metal gives salt + water) OR add SnCl 2 to distilled water (19g/L). Why would you do both? Doesn't SnCl 2 dissolve in water Robb? Tin is an "Active" metal, so it should "like" to go into solutio...

Would I be cynical in suggesting that perhaps the Gov't Grants do not come through until the beginning of the year and so in November/December ANYTHING that costs money would be unsuitable according to a business manager! I was told this morning that our "Books are Closed" and I am not all...

Is that just for Nitric Sue? Our 32% HCl come in a plastic bottle. For that reason, I have often put HCl of various strengths into the empty "shipping" bottles.

What about "Swimming Goggles"? They come in all sizes and are readily available and fairly water/splash resistant.

Narelle, Our Vertex was $685 from Serrata about a year ago. Ours is a bench top model. I just plug it in when I need it They have an "Under bench" (permanantly connected) model for about $885. There are two filters which cost $85 ans $64 each, which , I guess, need to be replaced every now...

Re: pH OF WATER

If the filter is recently purchased, as you have said, it should not need a filter replacement. Did you double check your pH reading? Did you use pH test paper or a data logger type probe to test it? Except for our very new probe, I do not trust the old ones that have been sitting on the shelf for a...

Re: screened methyl orange colour chart?

Am I on the wrong track here?
Page 132 of "The Laboratory" says that Methyl Orange is red at pH 2.8 and yellow at pH 4.6
Is that what you are after?

Re: FerrOUS Chloride (Hydrated)

Yep. Ferrous is Iron II. At least that is what it says on the lable. I can't see it as being substantially worse than Ferric Chloride, so Green it is, then!

Thanks all for your help!

FerrOUS Chloride (Hydrated)

Hi All, I have just unpacked a bottle of Ferrous Chloride, but I can not find it in the "Appendix D" bible. Ferric Chloride is there, and is a Green Dot. Does any body know what colour dot goes on Ferrous Chloride? (I don't expect anybody OUTSIDE NSW to understand this e-mail! It is just a...

Hi all, A question for the Chemists among us (of which I am NOT one!!) My Chemistry Teacher asked for some Ammonium Phosphate as an ingredient for a fermentation prac, making ethanol.
