I found this tray of ziplocked bags that has something in it that I suspect is cornflower by the feel of when I squish the bag . I've asked HT and she has no idea what it was used for or what it is . Frustrating thing is I have been asked to get 1kg of Cornflower and ziplocked bags for a slime prac ...

Bigmack - you will get used to Riskassess. A great tool as long as all teachers use it. Happy to share some tips. The labelling feature is worth the subscription on its own. Familia with the Labeling , used that a lot at last school , Bluffing my way through the ordering section , but may ask you s...

Re: Wanted .Copy of "Working in the Science"
Thanks for the enquiry LabbieSeth . Actually I wanted the whole thing . I know a Labbie that has the Cert 4 and stuff but has never worked in a a school environment and has no idea and I thought it would help her as it is specific to what is real outside Pathology world . But as it happens , I have ...

Re: Chemical Storage
….. eg oxidisers are to be stored a long way from flammables. I remember seeing that when I first read the WHS recommendations on that Merilyn . They said IIRC , a distance no closer that 5 Meters but seeing as my Chem store was barely 3 meters long , I realised you just have to do the best with wh...

Re: Cleaning of Wicks Used in Alkanols prac
In my experience ,most wicks can be evaporated an or washed , but the higher alkanols like Pentanol and Octanol are very "oily" and are almost impossible to clean effectively .And they stink to high heaven :yuck: I found this out the hard way when the Chem teacher decided he now wanted som...

Re: Cleaning of Wicks Used in Alkanols prac
We always had a labeled set of each Spirit lamp . 6 x Methanol , Ethanol , Butanol , Pentanol and Octanol IIRC . I used to empty the remaining alcohol though filter paper back into a special bottle for storage until next year . Could then store the spirit lamps anywhere . Having the same burners mea...

Wanted .Copy of "Working in Science"

Re: Chemical Storage
Mat , sorry I was just editing my post above . But in my opinion , that article is very comprehensive but totaly over the Top . The ADG class ( Australian Dangerous Goods) class should give you enough info to deal with storage . DG storage cabnets are expensive . Start off with a Flammable liquids o...

Re: Chemical Storage
Science Supply Australia and Modern Teaching aids used to have all that info in their printed Catalogs if you have one. It has the dangerous Goods codes. Heres a list I found on the internet . DG list.pdf So Cyclohexane is Class 3 or Flammable liquid ....it would go in your Flammable Liquid Cupboard...

Re: frozen hearts - help!
I used to pull hearts from the freezer and stick them in a sink of warm water and they would be ready in an hour ir so . However , I think they would be fine if you just left them in cold water overnight . . Stick them back in the fridge when you get in , in the morning until needed. Not had to defr...

Re: IEC Kundt's Tube Apperatus

I've also basically written a whole new operating Manual so that a teacher may follow it and get some meaningful results complete with printable work sheets that students can ...

Depending on how much you have to get rid of , I’d evaporate as much water out of it first ( in a fume hood)
I hate paying ti dump water
