Re: Fume Hood

Hey Macca, the boss has just contacted me and wants to know how your consequence rating works, regarding "1"
Also likelihood "E". What do the ratings stand for? and the biggie - who is the auditor?

We have just had our fume hood tested and are required to display a risk assessment for it. Does anyone have a template for completing one of these? We have these for practicals but the fume hood?

Re: Searching Chemwatch

If you email chemwatch - customer service @<URL removed, see forum rules> - and let them know what you are looking for, they can add it to your files. Sometimes it is necessary to use a code instead of name, we have to with nickel chloride. I have always had good turn around time in additions to our...

Re: Microscope service and repairs

Adjusting the height of the stage is usually done by moving the small screw at the back of the stage that acts as a brace (preventing the stage from going thorugh your slide) Adjust this so that the slide has come and then gone in focus, retighten the screw and lock it into position tightly with the...

Lab glassware

I have a register that the teachers are encouraged to record any breakages that occur within their lesson. Any behaviour that leads to mischeivous breakages is recorded and usually results in that student being responsible for cost of replacement. The register is an aid at stocktake time (to account...

Lab coats

At our school I get the job of washing the coats (180). We tried a laundromat but they charged $2.20 per coat and they couldn't keep them in class sets - all in together. We found they weren't coming back clean as we had to pay extra for soaking per item. The school finds it cheaper to pay me to was...

I have a small bench dishwasher, a Lemair Pony it's called, but over the years has now grown tired, but it never washed the glassware clean any way. I had to clean the glassware before putting it in. I'm now told to buy a new one and wondered if anyone had feedback on a dishwasher that works with ou...

Silver nitrate stains

We have had new bench tops in some of our laboratories and unavoidable stains from silver nitrate are starting to appear. I was wondering if anybody has had any successful removal techniques? If they are washed straight away with Hypo they are less trouble, but as with all things late disclosure is ...

I use wooden boxes that have fixed wood dividers in them with a sliding perspex front for ease of access. I have lots of these for all forms of rocks and minerals. I make sure we have 8 of each rock in each cubicle (class set). These have lasted for 8 years with no damage yet and the ease of just pi...

I have a flammable cupboard that has been directly vented into the fume hood. Before opening the door I have to switch on the extractor in the fume hood. This cupboard is in the room with me, and no the ventilation hasn't helped the smells.
