Re: Thermite Reaction

I've done it once myself and a teacher did a demo outside. Don't do it on a rainy day. Method in CSIS Appendix F under 'Aluminium'.

Re: How are you purchasing chemicals & Groceries

I purchase most of the groceries and abattoir items, scan receipts and lodge requisition form online - reimbursed into my bank account. Record all trips and claim on tax. Most chemicals from the usual SSA, Westlab etc.

We've got one, called Solar Airship (supplier unknown) which came with kite-line and handle. Works well in the morning.

Re: URGENT request for help!

Insist on teachers putting in risk assessments for pracs. If the activity is not compliant with CSIS, eg. a chemical is inappropriate for the year group, don't sign (if using RiskAssess). We can't manage the lab if teachers are helping themselves to the resources. If your HT doesn't accept this, may...

Re: flame test in spray bottles??

I don't like spray bottles because reasons stated by others, plus kids manage to extinguish the Bunsen flame. The IEC flame spectrometer is good for demos.

Re: GHS Labeling

Hi Bec. I started using Chemwatch but switched to RiskAssess when became available because you can generally enter whatever molarity or %age you want, but not with iodine for reasons unknown. So sometimes I check with Chemwatch if not happy with RA.

Re: Thin Layer Chromatography

Used TLC extensively in toxicology lab (1990s) for drugs of abuse screening. Plates were approx. 20 x 10 cm and we ran 20 samples plus controls on each plate. Plates were run in ethyl acetate, dried then viewed under UV lamp and sprayed with various chemicals to show up +ves.

Re: Do hope you are all SAFE & DRY?

The road to my school was cut by floodwaters this a.m., had to take the long way around. Waiting to hear of possible bridge closures at Windsor and Richmond - half the Science Dept. including myself live on the other side of Hawkesbury River.

Re: GHS Labeling

RiskAssess GHS labelling much easier to use than Chemwatch; just enter chemical name, choose label size (choice of 4), choose solid or solution; if the latter, enter molarity then download and print.
