Re: Do we know pracs in advance/provide classroom service?

The teachers here follow the Science Focus text book for years 7-10 which makes it pretty easy to anticipate experiments coming up. The question for me is at what stage are they ready to do the experiments and sadly my ESP fails in that aspect. Mostly I can check in advance that I have all what is n...

Re: Prac Assessment Tasks

You are absolutely spot on Barbara! It is a prac that is too much manual labour for the entire year to do within a few days if they are all given fresh flasks. The cost of the extra equipment and chemicals has been in the vicinity of $250 not to mention the washing up time! Pendulums are much less t...

Re: Sudan IV

Hi! "The Laboratory" pg 140 says 0.5g sudan III or IV 100ml 70% ethanol. Warm solution in a water bath until stain is dissolved. Filter. CAUTION: Sudan III or IV is a suspected carcinogen. This, I have made, and it works great but beware the Sudan stains terribly. Hope this helps. Lou P.

Re: Prac Assessment Tasks

Dear Ian, Many thanks for your reply. We have decided that although our prac did what the teachers wanted to assess, it was very hard on me to "top up" 120 bottles with solutions and wash 90 flasks between classes. (Just call me Wonderwoman - but to my teachers I'm Mrs Wonderwoman!) I will...

Prac Assessment Tasks

Hey everyone! I am in the middle of Year 10 prac assessment task and started wondering what everyone else does. We are changing our assesment tasks this year but they were Yr 7 - measuring a quantity of water, an unknown weight on the balance beam, temperature, then drawing equipment, calculating de...

Re: 0.1% DCPIP

Here is a recipe as given by Mother for Vitamin C testing without using DCPIP and I can say it works a treat! "Materials required: Iodine Solution Starch Solution(1 teaspoon of cornflour dissolved in 1 cup boiling water) made in advance and leave to cool. This solution is enough for about 8 stu...

I'm confused folks...(which is not very difficult to achieve let me tell you!)

CSIS lists DCPIP only for Senior use. What gives?

Re: matchboxes

Hey Estelle! I too, have the problem of diminishing number of match boxes! It is one of those things I have learnt to sigh about and go and buy more. At the moment I issue matchboxes with a prac that the teacher has a slip stating they have such and such number of matchboxes and each match box has t...

Re: ICE in case of emergency

Good advice! ICE has been going around the emails for a couple of years now, I have had it sent to me several times. I suspect many people now use this as emergency contacts details because of the internet. BUT carrying personal ID is a good idea as well especially if you are like me and allergic to...

Re: electrostatics- human chain

Ah! Yes the ole VDG... One of the teachers here remembers quite vividly (with tears in his eyes) of the time he set the VDG up on the bench and had a boy lay hands on it. He was remiss in not noticing the metal cupboard door handle at the right height for the student's genitals... Not a happy chappy...

Re: risk assessment

Ian, I always send in my mini MSDS' in with a prac just in case something happens and a quick referral is needed. My mini MSDS' are laminated and copied onto coloured paper according to user code colour. Once you get used to it, you find it second nature to put these things into the prac tote tray. ...
