I have the same problem. It doesn't seem to cater for science at all.

Re: investigating of factors affecting enzymes
This is some information I've collected on enzymes. 1) Papain , from the latex of the papaya plant, is one of a family of plant enzymes that includes bromelin (from pineapple) and ficin (from fig), all of which break down proteins. This is why the directions on a box of Jello remind you never to use...

Re: Perscription Safety Glasses.
I wear glasses for reading and found that wearing the 'fit over' safety glasses was not very successful, so I bought bifocal safety glasses. They have plastic shields on the arms to protect the sides of the eyes. I wear them all day. They cost about $150.00 from an optometrist and I claimed them bac...

Re: Ethanol & Permanganate experiment
I found this on the internet - I think it's from the University of Queensland (uq.edu.au) 14.1.8 Test heat of reaction, with potassium permanganate with ethanol BE CAREFUL! This is a dangerous experiment Use very small quantities and follow your safety rules. Remember that strong oxidants should be ...

I've just received mine and immediately filled it out and handed it to the deputy. I'm going both days this year - whether the school's paying for it or not.
Where are you staying, Liz? I've just booked into the Park View Motel as on the flyer.

So how do you actually measure the rate of photosynthesis? I don't think we do it here - at least I've never been asked to set it up.

Re: Safe Work Procedures?? Risk assessment
I have one set of full MSDS in the staffroom - that's 5 lever arch folders- and a set of mini's in each lab and the chemstore.
I'm sure I've read that mini's on their own are not sufficient, but you only need one full set in the school.

Re: Using Appendix D for labelling
Yes, the MW of Ba(OH)2 is 171.3, but that still gives 1M an orange dot. Solutions of barium hydroxide are orange at concentrations greater than 1% (0.05M), according to Appendix D.

Re: Copper sulfate soultion
The MW of copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H20) is 249.68, so you need 124.84g of CuSO4.5H20 to make a 0.5M solution of copper sulfate.
If you were using CuSO4 anhydrous you would need 79.81g to make up 0.5M solution.
Does that help?

Hi Cindy
All I can find is
"This is a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and anhydrous zinc chloride (which acts as a catalyst)"
I can't find any proportions - maybe they're not important?
