Ammonium Nitrate 0.1M solution

Hi everyone

Our very old CSIS Bible gives ammonium nitrate an orange code. However it also says < 5% is non hazardous. Chemwatch also describes 0.5M as non hazardous. My question is can a 0.1M solution be given a green sticker?

Thanks in advance

Kathryn :)

Traffic Light Oscillations using indigo carmine

Hi all Has anyone done Traffic Light Oscillations using indigo carmine? We do not have indigo carmine and I am wondering if there is an alternative indicator we could use to produce the same effect? We will be doing the bluebottle using methylene blue - just looking for something else. Thanks Kathry...

Re: New safety directions with dissection gear

What would even be the point of disinfecting before the dissection!!! The stuff they are dissecting is not sterile! Waste of time!

Re: GHS Labeling

I am the WHS people in our school and supposedly the expert on chemical safety! I have had a look at the "Labelling of Workplace Hazardous Chemicals Code of Practice" from Worksafe NSW as suggested by Merilyn. Personally I don't think the Riskassess labels satisfy the legal requirements ac...

Re: GHS Labeling

At the same time as relabelling solutions I have been trying to relabel some of the original bottles. I have managed to get a trial of Riskassess so I can see what you are all raving about. However, look at the difference between the labels for Silver nitrate (they both had the pictograms): Chemwatc...

eye balls in Wollongong

Hi
Anyone from the Wollongong area have a local source for eyeballs? I usually get them from Dissection Connection but trying to cut back on the delivery charge.

Re: GHS Labeling

Unfortunately I do not have access to Riskassess atm. I'm feeling very frustrated and wasting so much time trying to do labels. di-SODIUM HYDROGEN ORTHOPHOSPHATE on Chemwatch this is described as hazardous with a signal word of Warning. On the Chemsupply site it is described as non hazardous and no ...

Re: Where to buy talc in rock form

Sorry but I think it would be irresponsible as well as illegal to just put it into landfill if it is suspected of containing asbestos.

Re: Where to buy talc in rock form

We have Moh's kits dating back from before I started working here - so at least 10 years old. They are most probably from Serrata. What are most peoples thoughts on whether these should be disposed of - and if so how to go about it?

soil pH meter

Hi everyone

I need to purchase another soil pH meter. We currently have a Kelway meter which I don't think is particularly user friendly. Does anyone have a suggestion for an easier meter to use?
Thanks

DIY hologram for smartphones

With Science week coming up and the theme being light, I decided to check out the DIY hologram link which has been doing the rounds lately. It is so good! Very exciting when something like that works so well \:D/ The instructions say to use an old CD case to make the rhombus. I wanted something the ...

dishwasher

Hi all

I am looking to buy a new dishwasher this year. Our budget is unlikely to extend to specific laboratory models. can anyone recommend a brand / model that they have found to be good in a lab setting?
Thanks

Re: alternatives to Chemwatch

Thanks everyone - I think unless we can get a discount rate, we will not renew our subscription. Labbie - I find that unusual that Chemwatch has something as non-hazardous when the manufacturer had it as hazardous. I've usually found Chemwatch to err far to much on the side of caution and label thin...

alternatives to Chemwatch

As we are not a government school nor do we belong to the Independent Schools Assoc, we have a huge bill annual for Chemwatch. I am wondering what other schools do in our situation and if there is any cheaper alternative to Chemwatch?

Relief Job opportunity

Lucky me is planning to take some LSL term 2 of next year - yippee! We are looking for someone to work some of my hours while I am away, so that the labs won't be a complete disaster when I get back!! It would be for weeks 1- 4 in term 2 and about 15hrs per week. The hours would be spread over 3 day...
