Re: human pathogens in agar plates
Macca , I've just looked and this is the text book we use too. I don't understand how text book can be written that potentially encourage bad practice and potentially put us and the students and teachers at risk. Where is there risk assessment? There are other pracs in these books that I look at and...

I can attest to it being corrosive!! I spilt a small amount of the granules and the got caught in the wrist band of my watch. Once it hit my skin it burnt little holes in my wrist!!

Re: MSDS'S AND GHS
you also need the full sheet on file and available to all staff that use the chemicals. Who would not even know where they were or care for that matter!! I sometimes wonder why I bother. No one EVER looks at them except me. Our head teacher wouldn't even know if they were up to date. One of those t...

Calcium Metal
Good Morning,
I have two containers of Calcium metal granules that are so oxidized (I assume) that the calcium no longer reacts. Does anyone have any ideas how to rectify this or if I get new calcium how to prevent this happening?
Thanks
Lorrae

Re: Removing copper plating
A fairly strong molarity Nitric acid works a treat. You do need to leave them to soak for a while, all day or overnight, and the copper will come off. I did mine earlier in the year a some took a couple of soaks, changing the acid in between.

Whats Happened to Chemtalk
When I came in this morning and tried to access Chemtalk as I do every morning it would not let me load the page. I kept getting an error. Even when I did a Google search I couldn't get into the page. I managed to get in by a very obscure route and now the appearance of Chemtalk is weird. A strange ...

Re: Organic Waste Bottle
Good question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer. Why did they want you to put it in an organic waste bottle??
I have always absorbed it too!! The odour goes once it evaporates.

We found the actually quality of the glass in the side arm test tubes was not as good and with the intense heating needed for decomposition they were basically disposable one use only. Normal test tubes seem more durable. I have to throw out the occasional one bot not nearly as often.

That was my thought smiley. The HCl may denature the agar and not allow it to set?!

Re: CSIS training for new and long-term staff
I agree with Jodye. I have heard nothing! However my understanding of CSIS is that it is used as a guideline for us as Non-government schools. Because we are still overseen by DECT(or whatever it is called) as far as accreditation etc I think it is expected we follow it as much as possible. I use a ...

Re: GHS Labelling and frustrations with Chemwatch
Currently printing mini sds which I laminate a give out to the chemistry class. How is it when you are searching for a chemical eg magnesium chloride 0.1M and when it gives you the drop down list and you pick the one you want it still gives you a huge list including stuff that isn't even relevant an...
