Re: What to wear
When the no denim policy was introduced here some years back, the principal at the time said that he couldnt force staff not to wear denim but would really appreciate it if staff could follow the same rule. His reasoning was that it would stop the kids arguing about them not being allowed to wear it...

Re: Delivering gear to labs
I get all the gear ready on a trolley and the teacher comes and collects it or sends a student to get the trolley. Like Kimmy I find that sometimes they dont use the equipment on the day that it is ordered, so I wouldnt want to be wasting my time delivering it for no reason.

Re: sodium metal
We get a similar reaction with sodium and then do the same with potassium which gives a lovely purple flame. It demonstrates visually that reactivity of metals in group 1 of the periodic table increase as you move down the group. Then of course the kids want to see rubidium, cesium and francium so i...

Re: Thats All Folks
It's at this time of year that I wish I worked at a private school, I still have 2 weeks to go!! :-({|= But with a total of 11 weeks leave a year I'm not really complaining. I often wonder if I would be able to cope with only 4 weeks leave like most people have! Merry Christmas to all who finish thi...

Re: video
Thanks for that dolphinscales, I have now downloaded a copy of a great eye dissection from the site and about to burn on dvd. I have spent a good couple of hours looking through the different videos and though a lot are for a younger audience than we have here, they are still good.

Re: NATIONWIDE Laboratory Technician Survey
Hi Barbara, Your principal must be on the ball, I doubt my HOD could have answered some of the questions, never mind the principal! And yes, you should have had some input. The only part the principal was required to answer was whether they gave you permission to fill it out. Makes one wonder if he/...

Re: Frogs
So sorry to hear your news richard. It's events like this that make us think "why bother" as it's usually kids from the school that break in and destroy things. I cringe whenever a teacher wants fish tanks set up in the classrooms as I know there will always be some idiot who destroys it.

Re: swapping Jobs???
A swap around at my school wouldn't work, the ladies in the office get paid more than I do, so I cant see any of them wanting to swap with me and drop their pay. And of course, they would have no idea of what to do once they got here.

fog machine
Hi all chemtalkers, We had a bit of money left over this year \:D/ and have purchased a fog machine. We plan to use it with our "Airzooka" that blows a puff of air some 10 meters and the fog will make it more visible. We can shine a laser beam through it to see the beam and I can get a lot...

Re: Glassware in labs?
I only keep retort stands, gauze mats, tripods and funnel stands in the classrooms. I used to keep bunsens in there too until one year the kids kept nicking the tubes and columns to make bongs!
