Cleaning stock bottles
The previous labbie used to decant the organics for Senior Chem into smaller stock bottles to send out to class - so all the fun ones, hexane, hexene etc. I can't see the point of this. I just send out the bottle it comes in. Chemistry is the only subject that ever uses it so I don't see why I shoul...

Re: hoses for condensors
Still using rubber tubing here. It's the cheapest option, easy to source, can cut it to the length you need. It seems to do the job, ie never had any failures with it.

Re: ammeters / voltmeters
Ouch - we have the IEC ones but didn't pay $120 for them, maybe $80? Anyway, that doesn't help you now. Consider the cost of the analogue ones and how quickly they fail. The IEC ones seem really durable, we have had them a couple of years and had no problems with them. Teachers love them. They seem ...

Re: Glass tubing
Yeah, Haines, Science Supply Australia can help. There are also capillary tubing sets that come with capillary tubing with different internal diameters - all cut and ready to go with bungs. I had a teacher show me once how to make very thin capillary tubing from glass pipettes. I ended up with more ...

Thanks guys! Good to have back up to my thoughts. It's Year 10, not like they're working on a PhD.
I'm waiting to see the nose of the teacher get turned up!

Agar plates - how old is too old?
Just reaching out to see what your thoughts are on how old is too old for an agar plate? Long story (maybe it should be in the "just a whinge" section). Ext Science student asked for a heap of plates. Year 12 Bio teachers also asked for heaps. Ext Sc student used 10 then dropped the subjec...

Re: standardisation of NaOH
Not a great lot of help, Rosalie but our guys do a standardisation of NaOH and they get 0.1M NaOH and 0.1M HCl.
I agree - wouldn't give them conc acid

Re: Hoffman voltameter
Have you checked the bungs? As the rubber ages it shrinks and doesn't form a good seal. I could be wrong, but I think you can buy replacement electrodes for the IEC made voltameter. I usually find anything from IEC to be quite durable and often repairable.

What Ol' Mate can buy off the shelf is frightening! Bunnings have cleaned up their act a bit in recent years although they used to sell insecticides that any Jo Blow could buy, but we wouldn't even use them in the nursery because of the hazards associated with them (eg Rogor). However, they still se...

Re: mini SDS
Is it a legal requirement within NSW Dept. Schools to have/keep a chemical manifest on chemwatch? I agree it is a pain to use and would much rather create/use my own format. It is not a legal requirement for businesses with small quantities of chemicals on site to have a manifest. They are required...

Rosalie - you're an ex-firefighter!! OMG! That is a surprise. Yep, agree, we are a school with comparatively small quantities of chemicals. Maybe if it was a fire in a chemical factory they may want to check on their way. Bigmack - don't get me on a rant about Chemwatch. So glad I am in a school sys...

Re: Is this Cornflower ?
I thought borax was tetragenic? Mutagenic or something. So it is the long lasting problems, not just the corrosiveness issue.
If I was confident the powder in the bags was only cornflour, I would still throw it out as you don't know if it has been contaminated.

There is a process for disposing of unknowns - label it as "unknown chemical" and put it in with your next chemical clean up. There really is no other way.

Re: mini SDS
I can give you NSW legislation, but Queensland is pretty much the same. The legislation is very clear on what needs to be in a SDS and there is also a prescribed format. Mini SDSs do not meet that requirement. The SDS must be produced by the manufacturer or supplier. Chemwatch, which puts together m...
