Re: standardisation of NaOH
Not a great lot of help, Rosalie but our guys do a standardisation of NaOH and they get 0.1M NaOH and 0.1M HCl.
I agree - wouldn't give them conc acid

Re: Hoffman voltameter
Have you checked the bungs? As the rubber ages it shrinks and doesn't form a good seal. I could be wrong, but I think you can buy replacement electrodes for the IEC made voltameter. I usually find anything from IEC to be quite durable and often repairable.

Re: Neutralisation of HCl
What Ol' Mate can buy off the shelf is frightening! Bunnings have cleaned up their act a bit in recent years although they used to sell insecticides that any Jo Blow could buy, but we wouldn't even use them in the nursery because of the hazards associated with them (eg Rogor). However, they still se...

Re: mini SDS
Is it a legal requirement within NSW Dept. Schools to have/keep a chemical manifest on chemwatch? I agree it is a pain to use and would much rather create/use my own format. It is not a legal requirement for businesses with small quantities of chemicals on site to have a manifest. They are required...

Re: mini SDS
Rosalie - you're an ex-firefighter!! OMG! That is a surprise. Yep, agree, we are a school with comparatively small quantities of chemicals. Maybe if it was a fire in a chemical factory they may want to check on their way. Bigmack - don't get me on a rant about Chemwatch. So glad I am in a school sys...

Re: Is this Cornflower ?
I thought borax was tetragenic? Mutagenic or something. So it is the long lasting problems, not just the corrosiveness issue.
If I was confident the powder in the bags was only cornflour, I would still throw it out as you don't know if it has been contaminated.

Re: Is this Cornflower ?
There is a process for disposing of unknowns - label it as "unknown chemical" and put it in with your next chemical clean up. There really is no other way.

Re: mini SDS
I can give you NSW legislation, but Queensland is pretty much the same. The legislation is very clear on what needs to be in a SDS and there is also a prescribed format. Mini SDSs do not meet that requirement. The SDS must be produced by the manufacturer or supplier. Chemwatch, which puts together m...

Bigmack - you will get used to Riskassess. A great tool as long as all teachers use it. Happy to share some tips. The labelling feature is worth the subscription on its own. Familia with the Labeling , used that a lot at last school , Bluffing my way through the ordering section , but may ask you s...

Yep, we left home on the 7th May last year. Now but a distant memory.
Sadly, it is also nearly a year since my dad passed away.

Re: Welcome back to term 2
Last term was one of the longest eleven weeks of my life! It seemed to drag on for ever and I was so pleased to have two weeks off. This time last year, I was in the final two weeks before heading off on 14 weeks leave, which ended up being five months but that's another story. Nothing as exciting t...

Re: Chemical Storage
For NSW Schools, look on the Safework NSW website for the Code of Practice for Hazardous Chemicals. This details information that you need on a manifest and what you need on a register. For most of us, we only need a register which requires less information. There's also some handy info on labelling...

Five metres? Yeah, good luck with that in most school prep rooms/chem stores!
You're right, you work with what you have. Also good to remember, in the grand scheme of things, we are working with small quantities.

LOL I think I cobbled those Labels on Chemwatch and as I wasn't allowed to use a colour printer , I drew over the GHS symbols with a Red Pen :cheesy: Spirit lamps.jpg The reason I got in thehabit of filtering the spirit back into the saver bottles was due to all the rust and crustys in the burners ...
