Keep up the good work, your suggestions are really good. Not just the ideas but even where to get them. Thank you.

Re: what couldn't you do without
Oh Yes, something I hadn't thought of that will be crucial, as all our stuff will now live in a storeroom off the prep room with no student access.

what couldn't you do without
Now we're refurbishing I need to make sure we get all we need, and I'm wondering what equipment you simply couldn't do without. For pracs, for prep, etc. I'm thinking good measuring cylinders with plastic bottoms! And a van der graff that works first time every time. But I'm sure there are better an...

Re: Joules Calorimeter
Mine are just metal containers, the lid has the element fitted (which can rust or become detached) they fit inside a polystyrene box and lid that has holes for the electricity terminals, thermometer and a stirring rod. Even the ancient ones are the same, just falling apart.

Re: Hazardous products of reactions
Iron filings and sulphuric acid? and if it helps, look on the MSDS's for incompatibilities many of which are the actual prac. Like copper and nitric acid for equilibrium prac, Hoffmans apparatus with NaCl solns where you get chlorine (gas) sometimes, lots of hydrocarbon pracs will give off toxic fum...

Re: Nitric acid where do you store it?
I store it in acid cupboard on a separate shelf to sulphuric, I have never heard of incompatabilities between the two. Just checked the MSDS for acetic acid and sure enough it says class 8 and the class 3. I have it in the fire cupboard.

Model Farms sounds really interesting, what does your school actually teach, is it an agriculture type place?

Re: Safety showers.
Our refurb will give us a shower but without a drain as this is too expensive! We have hand-helds in both science rooms, nothing in the prep room. But I have never had need of one in 25 years so management seems to think they're not really necessary. The hand-helds have only been used a couple of ti...

Re: Heating rods
Maybe the mystery one is iron with a bit of rust and the iron one is something else. My metal kits(IEC ASEP) contain rods of lead, aluminium, iron, copper, brass, nickel, tin and titanium. The iron one is the only one that has a coppery colour (apart from copper of course). What colour is bronze? maybe ...
