Re: Brine Shrimp

Hi I haven't logged on for nearly 2 weeks as we've moving into our new building so I apologize for the slow reply. Brine shrimp eggs hatch best if the water is moving, so if you pop a airline ,not an airstone, into the water you may have more success. It keeps the eggs from settling on the bottom. th...

Re: voltameter & phenolphtalein

Hi Rae When I was looking at old voltameter threads I found this one. You asked Rae about the chemistry of the universal indicator and sodium sulfate thing. Well this is how I think it goes. Reduction occurs at the cathode so OH gathers there and electrons are given to the H+ cations which are then ...

Hoffman Voltameters

Hi
We've used these sucessfully for along time now but when I used them yesterday they didn't seem to work as effectively. Does anyone know if the electrodes in these things eventually perish?
Have a lovely day.
Thanks Krysia

making nylon

Hi One my teachers wants to make nylon using adipic acid. Does anyone else do it this way. If so what do you use to dissolve the adipic acid. We've tried cyclohexane. In "The laboratory" they use adipoyl chloride or sebacoyl chloride but we don't have those.

Re: lab refurb or oh God cant someone help me

Hi Our new labs and prep room are nearly finished and I got to have a look last week. The computer in the prep room has been put on the bench directly above the dishwasher?!??!! I have no desk, I can live without it I guess but that just doesn't seem like a good place for the computer. I have no dra...

RiskAssess software

Hi Everybody Does anyone out there use the software for risk assessments in Science by Phillip Crisp. If you do how do you like it? When we were accredited they said that we have to include a risk rating on our risk assessments, the sample on the risk assess website doesn't look like it does? Does e...

Re: making cell models

Just for fun really my kids made cells out of wax. they used differnet wax colouring and when the wax cools enough to be handled can be shaped into anything your heart desires. You do have to work quickly but then we had dinner by cell candle light and watched all our hard work melt. Don't think thi...

Re: sailors string

Hi Not 100% sure but I think this is the same as whipping twine $9.95 for 100m at Whitworths in sydney but I'm pretty sure you cold get it at other marine supply stores. We use to fix are sails after the kids usually cause rips doing something dopey in high wind. Its really strong and does the job. ...

Hi Everyone Thank God it's Friday!!!!!!!!!! thanks for all the replys. I managed to pull the pin on the heating of the potassium nitrate. Hi Does anyoe else out there use saturated potassium nitrate solution to grow crystals with Yr7. All the other teachers here use copper sulfate or alum. One teacher has requested the potassium. I read in the MSds that heating may cause expansion or decomposition and violent rupture of containers. Do...

Disposal of chemicals

This is one thing I get confused with. (Or I should say another thing I get confused with) I've just made a saturated potassium nitrate solution. I'm looking at disposal. In CSIS it says waste solution may disposed of down the sink. Chemwatch MSDS says to treat a 3% solution with sulfuric acid to ma...
