Only thing I can think of would be cobalt - though why that would be in the puddle....??
[Co(H2O)6]2+(aq)(pink) + 4Cl-(aq) ⇌ [CoCl4]2-(aq)(blue) + 6H2O(l)
Removal of chloride ions through precipitation with silver nitrate would push equilibrium to the left.

Re: Broken Glassware
Most of our broken glass is from smallish containers - lots of test tubes and small beakers - so I give the teachers an ice cream container which when full I put the lid on and tape up, label broken glass and put in bin.

Not sure that you mean periodic table tiles... here is a jigsaw set of positive and negative ions for this sort of thing...

Not sure what you are allowed to use over there. Found this one that uses hexane and isopropyl alcohol. http://oxytops.wordpress.com/2012/10/31 ... -tea-bags/

Hi Kathryn,
This looks like a fairly reasonable liquid soap formulation. The first four ingredients are surfactants commonly used in liquid hand soaps and shampoos.
Cheers,
Jane

Similar to Lada, we get them to boil the water over the bunsen, turn the bunsen OFF, then put the boiling tube with meths into the hot water.

Re: How do you test the energy in sugar?
You can use marshmallows instead of tiny teddies but they are quite messy. Wonder whether you could use fairy floss as this is pretty much pure sugar? We normally use cheezels instead of peanuts here for measuring the energy content of food - they are easily stuck onto a pin set in plaster of paris ...

Re: samples from the bottom of the pond
There are bottom, middle, top samplers available for sampling bulk storage tanks (think petrochemicals, previous life!). They are basically a stainless steel cylinder with a pull valve and shut off when full. Google "bottom tank sampler". You could try borrowing one or make your own...

I have been known to be out collecting insects from my garden at 7am for this... slaters, spiders (the bigger the better in a boys school, luckily 99% are non-poisonous here in NZ), stick insects, wetas, worms, and snails as well as going to the supermarket and purchasing 2 prawns, 2 shellfish etc. ...

We do the same as Jazz with Lithium, it is useful (but not essential) to have both lithium and sodium so you can demonstrate (teacher only) the increased reactivity of elements in the same group as you go down the periodic table.

In my opinion a generic MSDS for "pure" chemicals is fine - theoretically the hazard properties for potassium iodide supplied by Joe Bloggs will be the same for that supplied by the Queen! (Unfortunately I know that different suppliers MSDS's in practice often have slightly different or co...
