Chemical Store - New Building
Hi All, I am in the process of setting up new labs and there are all kinds of problems. Didn't allow enough space for my flammables cupboard because an air vent was put in that was not on the original plans. I also have suspicions that they have not fireproofed the chemstore. I saw them fireproofing...

Re: chemwatch labels
I copy and paste chemwatch labels into word and manipulate them myself. I found it hard to see the labels so by manipulating them I can make writing bigger and add any extra information needed. I keep a template and just copy and past the info across. See attached. Then I print labels on the hazard ...

Re: disposal
I have attached a disposal list that I follow. It probably needs updating but its a good guide. Also in regards to copper sulphate, store in glass container with steel wool. I'm not entirely sure about this process but apparently the steel wool removes whatever is toxic to marine life and then can b...

Re: Corks
I purchase my corks from brewing shop. There not overly expensive and even diameter at both ends. If not, try craft/arts store, sometime they stock those weird items.

Re: Risk Assessments
Thanks K,
Makes a lot of sense. Ill start to follow that. So anything related to a prac goes with that risk assessment, anything that I do that poses a risk and isn't directly related to a prac e.g stock solutions, do my own risk assessment and get the HOD to sign off.
Thanks Everyone..

Re: Risk Assessments
Thanks everyone. I thought the same as Rae, it cant hurt doing them, it doesn't take long and it shows that we are reviewing the risks of the tasks we perform. I was thinking of doing risk assessments for the following: Making agar Making gels for Electrophoresis Diluting/ preparing solutions etc Ba...

Risk Assessments
Hi All, I am trying to get RiskAssess up and going. Been using the system about a year and is going well. However, I would like to know whether we have to do a risk assessment for anything that we (labbies) do in the preproom. e.g. making agar, mixing solutions etc. Is this a legal requirement? If n...

Risk Assessments
Hi All, Does anyone know if there is something similar to RiskAssess but for the whole school including sports/ excursions? I have had my WHS manager ask if there is something online that covers the whole school. I have had a look and cannot find anything. At the moment we use the risk assessment te...

Re: New Data Loggers
I agree with smiley, We use Vernier and scientrific have been great. They have even come to Cairns and held a PD for the teachers. Hardly any issues and the dataloggers are sturdy and strong, great for outdoors. You can hook them straight up to a laptop which means you can bypass using a datalogger ...

Re: CONASTA 63
Hi Nicky, I was disappointed I missed the Forensics excursion, I had the morning breakfast and it was not a fun morning running through botanic gardens getting drenched at 7 in the morning. Lost track of time. Adelaide Uni was great. Beautiful old buildings and the labs were amazing. I have never se...

Re: CONASTA 63
Hey Nicky and Margaret, Congrats Margaret on the Mythbusters tickets, I noticed you won them!!! Good to see a labbie win something!! I completely agree with Margaret, the workshops were really good. I got a lot out of it. The big disappointment was that the 2 star speakers weren't there. That happen...

Re: CONASTA 63
Hi Nicky, It was my first CONASTA and I really enjoyed it. The weather was terrible but that's Adelaide for ya. I got a lot out of it and caught up with my old boss, old college teacher and some of the reps I deal with so it was a great way to network. The only issues I had was trying to find my way...

Re: Laboratory Skills Course
I managed to get the QLD government to pay for my Cert IV through Symbio Alliance in Brisbane (correspondence). I think it cost about $10,000. Once I finish I will be going to continue on with my Diploma which will cost me about $4,000. (my pay rise will cover that) Not complaining, not bad for a $1...

Re: CONASTA 63
Hey Nicky, Adelaide's a strange place, has some really cool arcades and old buildings. Whilst your there, I would recommend having a look at ST Peters Cathedral behind Adelaide oval. Such a beautiful old church. My parents keep saying how cold it is. It won't get any warmer than about 16C and will b...

Re: GHS and Labels
I have been changing over to GHS since this year. I copy from chemwatch and paste it into word. The old chemwatch made it a lot easier to do this, the new ffx is a little harder to copy over to word. If you would like to know how, I can show you. I have set up a database for all labels. its a little...

Re: Broken Glassware
I have sharps bins in all labs as well as my preproom. If something is broken, they sweep it up and place it in the bright yellow sharps bin. At the end of each term, I go around and collect all the glass and put it all in a box with newspaper and put it in a skip bin. I really don't know how else i...

Re: New Science Lab?
Hi All, The only downfall for ceramic is if you drop a weight or something heavy, they can crack and are very expensive to replace. Stainless Steel looks a lot nicer however after years old chemicals/ acid etc going down the sink, its rusts and looks terrible, but at least they are cheap to replace ...

Re: CONASTA 63
Hi Margaret,
It should be a great time. Adelaide has some great venues. In the 20 years I lived in Adelaide I have never been to Adel Uni or Adel Town hall. Cant wait!
Although I am not looking forward to the horrible cold.
See ya there!
Dave

Anyone planning on going to CONASTA 63 in Adelaide. I have just been approved and will definitely be there.
Cant wait to meet all the other labbies throughout Australia.

Re: New Science Lab?
We are getting new labs next year. My boss has tried to put as much imput as possible but we both have resigned to the fact that there will be problems. every time they have asked for imput, they do the complete opposite because its not pretty enough. it has taken nearly 8 years for it to finally ha...
