Re: Exposure to contaminated petri dishes
Wow! Just got back on to read more from my learned colleagues! Thanks for the extra info. Fibreweb, I've got my CSIS open right now to the page you quoted. Enlightening, as was Rae's comment about the difference between culturing and subculturing. Then I read on and had to admit the incubator stays ...

Re: Exposure to contaminated petri dishes
Thanks folks, for your input. Have phoned the hotline to report but yet to find out exactly what the agar plates were infected with. Guessing that the teacher may not be too sure....
Anyway, appreciate your points of view. Feeling quite well by the way.

Exposure to contaminated petri dishes
Hi folks, Just interested in your feedback please. Had an incident where contaminated petri dishes were opened by students (!) then put in a tote tray in the prep room where I stuck my hands in them. Quickly washed hands, bundled up dishes into plastic bag, then newspaper, then more plastic and put ...

Re: DOTS on Chemicals
Hi ladies,
I've just asked my HT about GHS and drew a blank look (no surprises there). Has advised me not to do anything until someone tells us to.
Tempting but...
At least we can be prepared for when the DEC wakes up.
Cheers,

Re: Annual Chemical Stock Take
Hi Labbie, I did the whole stock take - solutions and all, as I didn't know any better. I am happy with it though because I went through and tossed out a lot of unnecessary stuff. Then in August we have a chemical clean up at the local tip and the Farm Assistant took away all my nasties. Stock take ...

Re: PD day on chemical security
OMG! GHS! LOL I’d better get reading fast. Must admit it came as a great surprise to me as well, Trish, a fellow country bumpkin it seems! Go the unification Liz - like to think that will happen. Also like to think the principals will let their staff know something. Will definitely be joining...

Re: how to label solutions
Hello and welcome! This is a question I have asked too. The following attachment is what I use. - suspect the same as labbie. I just cut and paste the labels I need into another Word document and then print them off on the corresponding coloured paper - green paper for 7-12, orange for 11-12, red fo...

Re: Corrosive Liquids cabinet
Thank you all for your input. I really love being able to ask a group of really smart people!! It is a HDHPE cupboard so is made of the right stuff although there are metal screws in the hinges that are rusty after just over 12 months. Had the expectation that it would handle tougher condi...

Corrosive Liquids cabinet
Hey folks, Has anyone had any trouble with their corrosive liquids cabinet corroding? No I'm not kidding :banghead: I was putting back the conc HCl this morning and the handle came right off in my hand and fell to pieces on the floor. Hmm. I had noticed earlier when I was getting the HCl out (wearin...

Re: Humane goldfish farewell
I love you crazy people! :cheesy: I have been gently telling Bubbles that it is okay to 'let go' but he is not a quitter and although has been struggling for a couple of weeks now, will not go belly up. Not sure what to try but I am much reassured that I can give him a little sleep if he deteriorate...

Re: Fizzy Tablets
Love the denture tablet idea!
We use a ship load of alka seltzer tablets for the Year 7 prac task - making a lava lamp. Kids have a ball.
I buy them from the local IGA - good value but I reckon those denture tabs could be cheaper.
Thanks,
cheers,

Re: Annual Chemical Stock Take
Hello Lurra/Noona/Rosalie! Gosh that name's nearly as long as The Search Engine! Sounds like we are on the same page. I did encourage the other departments to do theirs - which they have done in a fashion, obviously with not the same talent and precision as a lab assistant. :cheesy: I'm actually qui...

Annual Chemical Stock Take

Re: Which bunsen?
Thanks guys, I thought what I had was just fine and that a big flame was not an issue. All the better to see it with, my dear. We have a big gas tank in the school yard and this hasn't changed recently. Read back over some bunsen posts this morning where the gas had been changed without the labbie k...

Which bunsen?
Hello folks, I have had the principal and the local plumber/gasfitter ask me about the correct bunses to use  apparently the plumber did a test of a range of bunsens and some flames were unsuitably large. Anyone have any information on what sort of bunsens and what size flames NSW DET should ...

Where do you buy your beakers from?
Hello folks, Long time no chat. Haven't had a chance to see how you are all going this year. Have hit the ground running. Unfortunately plenty of beakers have "hit the ground" too and I need to order more. Have just discovered that Q Stores no longer stock beakers ??? :? Do any of you clev...
