Does anyone know if there will be any similar training conducted in regional areas? I would love to do this course, in fact I think it may be the one I booked and paid for last year but they cancelled it. :?
It would be a lot easier for some of us country kids if we could have more local access to these things, but we can travel if it is worthwhile.

I'm thinking of going... I just got it in the mail today and I'll have to get approval. Perhaps we 'country kids' can car-pool it to Sydney? I can't imagine they would let my fly down for the day!

Is this "Update" because the DET has issued an update of their materia/guidelines, or for those people who havent done the training( ie the training thats been the same for a nomber of years?)

You guys in the metropolitan areas are just so lucky to have close access to these courses. We, in the bush on the other hand are disavantaged by distance and having to pay for accommodation. Most schools in regional areas baulk at the expense of sending anyone to courses outside their own areas.Even within my area I have to give good reason to attend anything associated with science.Rarely happens!!! :cry2:
Cheers

Yes us country kids rarely get to travel down to the big smoke for these courses so conducting them in regional centres would be great! Have just done a very conservative estimate of what the $180 course would actually cost for me to go to from Lismore. There's the fee itself, there is the return airfare (at least $230 return), then there's accomodation ( our earliest plane wouldn't get me there in time for the course), train fares out to the venue ($ 32) plus meals etc etc. The grand sum of in excess of $500 is hard to justify when we are all short of basic equipment, books etc.

Mother, I live on north side of Sydney and would be VERY happy for you to stay with me if you can make the trip to the conference. If you come by train, I can give you instruction how to get to my place.

Can anyone tell me what the "mandatory workplace training chemical safety in schools" is?
I thought the Dept just let anyone loose in science and weren't expected to have any training nor is any offered. I have done the two year TAFE course but am interested in learning how to properly use the chemwatch chemical inventory, there must be an easier way than the way I do it now so this course sounds worthwhile, however the cost will be a factor.
Thanks Estelle

Hi to the other country kids

I've applied for T&D funding for the course costs and air fares. Hopefully the powers that be will come to the party and any other expenses I will claim on my tax. I have a friend I can stay with in Sydney. Might make a weekend of it. \:D/

Hi there Lada
Many, many thanks for the offer of accommodation, very nice of you =D> =D>
A lab tech.from one of the other schools here is thinking of going to the course,so we will probably go together(if our schools allow us to go!!) and share a room somewhere close to the venue. If someone has any idea where we could stay close -by to the school,I would be glad to hear from you.
Take care
Mother

This looks like it will be a worth while inservise and my head of department has approved it. I hope to go on the Friday. If there are any others in my region going it would be good to car pool. I can offer accomodation though I am about an hour to an hour and a half from the venue.

Hi everyone,

Got my info sheet on this today.

If there's a Science Asistants' Fairy Godmother then this course will clarify some of the confusion over MSDS requirements & Risk Assessments within Dept. schools, as well as the awaited CSIS update and possibility of a DEpt. run chemical disposal pick-up.

SO - I want to be there to hear it first-hand!

My question to you all is:
Can anyone give me the dates for the St Marys' Conference this year?
It would be brilliant IF they coincide eg. St Mary's the previous Thurs/Fri and this one Monday 26th. Then that's a really good argument in favour of me getting to both.
Would like to know before I discuss it any further with my SAM, and no doubt time will be a factor in securing a place.

Especially (all you locals who are reading this) if we car pool. I have family in Sydney and am more than happy to spend the weekend at my own cost. Saves money from the school's point of view then, too.

Fingers crossed.....
Liz

Hello.. ME again. Just repeating my previous post.

Is this "Update" because the DET has issued an update of their materia/guidelines, or for those people who havent done the training( ie the training thats been the same for a number of years?)

Does anyone know if the DET have updated their guidelines or are we still working from the existing CSIS 1 & 2 Manuals???

If they havent updated... then theres no big rush. I still train/induct people using the existing material, and Anyone who hasnt yet done the training can ask their Head Of Dept or Principal for the training.

Please someone reply to this one... what d'ya all know? [-o<
