Sintered Glass Gooch type Crucibles

Good Morning Chemtalk Family,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a way to clean sintered glass gooch type crucibles of a porosity of 3? They were used to quantitatively determine the amount of sulfates in fertiliser.

Hi There, We just did that prac here and I just clean them with hot soapy water and then soak them in a container of plain water ,after a few days I turn them upside down and fill the small area that is now at the top with water - it drains through eventually and I refill it a couple of times - it seems to flush everything out - no complaints from the chemistry teacher in the last few yaers anyway. OK, I admit that after 18 months in the job, I am STILL a "Newbie", but what the dickens is a "sintered glass gooch type crucible"?

Hi Ian and Louie,
I, too, am only 18 months into this job and had no idea what these type of crucibles were until I was asked to price them late last year! Sintered glassware is used for the filtration of liquid and gases. It incorporates a porous glass disc as a filter media which is non-corrosive and reuseable. Best way I found to understand them was to "Google" them.
Thanks Louie for your advice, I will see how the crucibles go using your technique. The experiment went very well but after looking on the net and some sites recommending washing/percolating with conc. HNO₃ and other nasties I was beginning to think these crucibles are gonna mean a bit of work for me!

Not sure if this is any help to you, but our Chem. teacher is using titration method to determine sulfate in fertiliser.
It is dead easy to prepare. It uses magnesium sulfate as fertiliser and barium chloride (0.05M) as the standard solution.

I'd love a copy of the the titration prac as well.
Using the crucibles has always been a hit or miss. It was greatly improved last year with the use of gooch rubber sleeves but still doesn't solve the washing up issue.
