its so good to have Chemtalk back, thank you Westlab.

I need to organise First Aid kits for prep rooms can everyone let me know what they have in their first aid kits please.

We are a DoE school, so we only have band aids in our first aid kits. The DoE policy states we must send them up to first aid for treatment, when we where a smaller school, and I did first aid, it was diffrent.

We have a first aid kit in each prep room. They hold burn gel, antiseptic cream, alcohol free cleansing wipes, eyewash and wound irrigation ampoules, sharp scissors, tweezers, safety pins, splinter probes, surgical gloves, fabric dressing strip, adhesive tape, paper tape, gauze bandages (assorted sizes), non stick wound dressings, triangular bandages, thermal blanket etc. Pretty much your basic first aid kit.
Check out Westlab first aid kits. I just had a quick browse to see what they were offering. Or you could just do the St.Johns thing. Shop around and see who has what you need. Ideally your first aid kits should be supplied by your school and should not come out of your science budget.

We have a similarly stocked first aid kit. WHS legislation no longer specifies requirements for first aid kits but recommends a risk assessment to determine what you should have, although the code of practice also contains to old mandated list.

So you need to consider what could happen that required first aid - burns (but best treated in short term with water), chemical contamination, and cuts. As the students use sharp instruments (scalpels) you should be equipped for dealing with deep wounds. So, to play it safe, having the "well stocked first aid kit" is not a bad idea.

I appreciate that DoE schools may have different rules.

We have a wall mounted metal cabinet in the prep room and also a portable 'tackle' type box one that is available also. They are similarly stocked as others and checked by one of the Teacher Assistants every term unless we say we used something specific like all the tape and then it is restocked as soon as possible after that

Hi. Just wondering what should be in first aid kits for science? Do they have to be as complete as the general first aid kits? Thanks.

Something for people to consider, we have a wall mounted Diphoterine® kit in our Chem Prep room. We do use high concs of some chemicals so it is a must. Expensive...but not as much as what an eye would cost. Can purchase at most lab suppliers. food for thought
