Hi all,

I have a teacher wanting to do the above mentioned prac on Monday, but I don't have any Tin Chloride......is there anything else I could use?? I love how they give you plenty of notice! Not!! :-o :clap3:

Thanks in advance
Helen.

Use your patience? Or not, and say "no"!

Drop some tin into some hydrochloric acid? It might be a bit slow, but it would get you some Tin Chloride.
What is the prac?

We have never done this experiment so I Googled it.
The page I found used Iron Nitrate, nitric acid and Potassium thiocyanate.
Where does the Tin Chloride come into it?

Thanks for the replies everyone.
The name of the prac is "Iron Thiocyanate Equilibrium", or that's what she has called it!
It's to do with Yr 11 depth studies....one student is doing this.
The order was for Iron (III) Nitrate, Potassium Thiocyanate, Tin Chloride, Silver Nitrate, Sodium Hydrogen Phosphate ( don't have that one either), Ammonia, distilled water, spot plate.
Anyway I've told her what we don't have......

Thanks again!

We use iron chloride...in fact a class are doing said prac as we speak!
Prac is from Elements of Chemistry.

We use Iron Chloride, potassium thiocyanide, Sodium Fluoride, Silver nitrate and the equalibrium mix which is iron chloride and potassium thiocyanide. Add other solutions to the base equilibrium mix and you drive the equilibrium either direction. i.e. F- and Ag+ will produce a clearing by binding iron, SCN- Fe3+ will intensify colour.
