Does anyone have any simple activities re - making a compound, relevant to year 8 level? The teacher doesn't want to do iron sulfide.

Thanks.

We do magnesium in crucibles to make magnesium oxide.

I am going to just repeat what I have said for a few years, we cannot get the magnesium ribbon to burn, been going for the entire lesson, but alas it will not become MgO, it confounds me as we used to do it every year and it worked. Lift the lid off a bit, loose coil in the bottom of a crucible, big bunsens, and still no luck. Driving me nuts.

We had very small piece's of Mg to burn, not a coil, Students would rub the ribbon first with steel wool, before burning.

At my old school they would have a Bunsen underneath (no gauze mat, just the triangle) and one aimed in the top with the lid held half on ready to just place down when it lit. Team effort and I’m pretty sure it was only seniors.
