Alternative to nitrogen dioxide for year 7 demo on gasses
Re: Alternative to nitrogen dioxide for year 7 demo on gasse
try this one.. in a fume cupboard or ina a large well ventilated room.. make sure the bottle is thick glass, I used a Bailey's bottle so didnt have to paint it..
Genie in a Bottle.
Materials
35% Hydrogen Peroxide – 40mL
Tissue paper
1 teaspoon Manganese Dioxide
Cotton thread – dark
Wine bottle
Cork to fit.
1 Prepare the wine bottle by painting it black with glitter on it.
2 Pour the hydrogen peroxide into the bottle.
3 Carefully wrap the manganese dioxide up in the tissue to make a pouch –
tying it carefully with the cotton thread and leaving a long thread on one end.
4 Suspend the pouch in the bottle, ensuring it stays above the level of the
hydrogen peroxide.
5 Use the cork to hold it in place.
6 When required, pull the cork out.
The manganese dioxide falls into the peroxide and produces gas in a plume.
The idea of using dark thread isi so that it is ‘invisible’ and it appears that pulling the cork out allows the ‘genie’ to escape.
